I am trying to decide on a new carry on for my upcoming safari. I'll have 5 flights each way including a charter into camp. I have been trying to decide on a new bag, my current one won't meet international size requirements. I have been leaning toward the Red Oxx Skytrain but wanted to ask the frequent flyers what they prefer.

I just took a backpack that I would also use during the hunts.

Small backpack with documents and breakables. Check the rest.

Cheapo Coleman available at Walmart and the lightest, max size carry-on I could find.

From someone that does a lot of flying this one goes with me everywhere. Can customize it a bit to meet your needs as well if you want to use it as a day pack with the MOLLE. They make one with out the laptop compartment as well if that doesn't interest you, but even if I don't bring my laptop it's good for paperwork/documents as it would be impossible to open without you knowing if it's on your back.

What's sometimes lost in these discussions is not the size but the airline carrier weight limitations. I may be able to stuff thirty pounds of stuff in the bag but SAA says 8 kilos max weight. Mine was weighed at the ticket counter, tagged ok and then at the gate, an agent went around checking for the tags. If not tagged, they were weighed.

I just took my day pack that I used while hunting. Enough room for travel docs, camera, one change of clothes in case checked luggage gets lost, a tooth brush, and RX meds.

I shake my head every time I see someone fighting with a max spec size hard carry on case. As others have posted just use a small backpack or daypack and don't over stuff it. It will conform to most all type plane's stowage constraints.... not every plane is a jumbo. It ain't rocket science

I do too. If you aren't capable of lifting it and holding it over your head for more than ten seconds, check it.

I was looking for a soft bag specifically for this reason. The PH said to bring soft bags as they were easier to stuff on the charter into camp. I'm not looking for a giant bag but it will be used for other traveling in the future so that is a consideration also.

Badlands backpack is my carry on.

Agree with some others, backpack with valuables, some toiletries, necessary stuff for travel

This is the backpack I use for a carry on. Documents, cameras and binos. Once I arrive at camp, I then sort through and take out what I don't need for my hunting day pack. It's easily large enough for a laptop or tablet, but I don't carry one when I hunt so that's not an issue. Made of a soft almost fleece like material on the outside. When I'm not traveling, its used to store and carry my gun photography items. More than a year old and so far, no rips or tears.

Good to know about the SAA weight restriction. I’ll have to weigh my pack before I leave next month as I usually stuff it pretty full to include an extra change of clothes, binos, extra battery packs, iPad, chargers etc. The extra set of clothes has come into play more than once while flying.

I purchased the red oxx sky train about 4 years ago and have used it as a carry on dozens of times in the US, and 5 countries. I keep it in backpack mode mostly. Packed enough for a 10 day trip in Spain last year! Absolutely love the pack!

KLM economy class has a max weight of 26lbs. for a carry on and personal item combined.

I love Red Oxx bags, I used the C-Ruck on my last safari and it worked great.

Hello,
I might be able to help you out depending on how many you need. I could probably spare 50-75 .285g A-Frames. They are factory pulls that look like new. Let me know if you are still looking,
Thanks,
Gary

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.
