I am about to take possession of 9.3 x 62 rifle built on an FN action. It has the vertical flag safety which I would love to replace with a horizontal 3 position safety (like the win m70). Anyone have any experience with this conversion? All insights are welcome.
Thank you, Ferenc

Yes ! I just installed a Parkwest 3 position safety on my .458 WM built on a military Mauser 98 action. Installation went quick, fairly easy. I am super happy how it turned out. The firing pin, bolt body, and striker/cocking piece do need to be modified but I did not find it difficult with a dremel and a bit of care. Total installation time was about 3 hours working slow and carefully.

Here is a picture of the instructions:

And here is a picture of safety installed on my .458 with the flag type it replaced.

Performing step "A" is the trickiest, getting the notch in bolt body placed correctly. Some dykem or sharpie marker on the back of bolt body will show where the bolt lock plunger is contacting the bolt body, this will show where to place the notch.

wow, that looks fantastic. It turned out really good. Do you have a rough estimate how much the part cost? You did an awfully nice job, if only you were closer so I could take a lesson or two from you…

I also installed a Parkwest safety when building 404J from Czech 98 Mauser. It turned out well. I believe Gentry are higher quality but more expensive. You definitely need to be a bit handy to install them.

Thank you for all your insight. I consider myself rather handy but I am also a perfectionist which often creates a stumbling block during the process. Thank you for the eBay link. I tried the gentry ones but they do not seem to be available.

Parkwest is the cheapest quality safety, about $175 plus finishing, fitting, installing. It's pretty-good, but not stupendous. It uses a roll pin to hold on the lever. I have broken one. They were great about sending me a new roll pin.

Go to the $350+ level, and the german ones use a custom screw that is more durable. I can't remember if EAW or Rechnagle is the maker. It is a much higher quality safety.

The former is sufficient for most people.

Parkwest included a spare roll pin with the one I bought.

Yep, and both of mine fell out. I adapted a drill bit of proper diameter. Cut it off to fit. Then pounded one end slightly flat on side so it stays put when forced in the hole. Gentry also uses a screw retainer instead of pin. I think Wisner out in Washington also makes them for 98 Mauser. They do good work.

Wisners inc makes a beautifully machined piece as well. Much tighter fit than the gentry I played with. He sells them for around $175 if I remember, I know he’s a forum member here but not very active.

Please allow a question: has anyone ever put a three position safety on a Mannlicher Schoenauer?

Anyone has the contact for Wisner inc?

Wisner also has safeties listed on Ebay. They are 190.00 if I remember correctly.
