Wow that looks like a great area.

And what a great ad laying out all the details and costs. One would really miss out if not adding that buffalo;)

What are your success rates on leopard?

I’m considering a leopard hunt in the near future and will need to do more research. I’ve never hunted Leopard…

I’m interested in the success rate as well.

Considering a hunt like this, what will these adders due to the total cost and how important are they to success?

Optional Pre - Baiting Fee - $ 2 000. How much pre-baiting is required and how critical is it to success of your Leopard hunt?

Cost for overnight stay on route and back from safari area - $ 200 per person.( optional Extra ). Please explain the benefits of this overnight stay and what the alternative is?

Bait animals will taken at 50% of Trophy Fee. Will this include Trophy animals used as bait or do you target specific animals for bait?

Having been involved in two leopard hunts, the second being my wifes baited hunt in Tanzania with an incredible number of cats on bait. The younger resident PH simply did his best to keep baits up all season. There were 6 leopard on bait when we arrived and after our group took 3, 6 were still on bait when we left and the next hunter took one. But that area has a LOT of leopard, lion and hyena. And was a large area next to National Park in real wild Africa. Like I assume this is. Plenty of Plains game and buffalo as well. Not condensed like in South Africa. But very healthy natural populations. Leopard hunting can be monotonous and a risk.in Tanzania we took 17 critters including that leopard and a lion.

My personal leopard hunt was much farther North in Mozambique in an area with mostly sable and baboons, zero buffalo. Never saw a zebra. Saw a few reedbuck and eland. That hunt was with dogs, Conraad Shepers with the late Tinus Botha's dogs really saved the hunt. I actually had the option on that hunt to take two leopard and got a very nice mature male on day 4 after about a 12 kilometer chase. Had the cat bayed once in between on top of a big koppie but it ran again before I could get up a shot. Very exciting hunt!

If you use dogs, you still need to bait because you must start with a fresh track and you need to get that somehow;)

If i did this hunt I would want to discuss with the PH but having g allready taken a nice cat, my preference woukd be to start fresh, no pre-baiting. Be in on the entire experience! But I would also inquire about adding days if needed. Probably book flights with a good agent i could contact from the bush and reschedule the return if needed. At $850/day on a wilderness area (I'm saying that is econical), i would stay extra days if the PH and Outfitter could accommodate that and if we had things happening but had not gotten the cat yet.

Most definitely add the buffalo. That is a lot of leopard bait.

If you are concerned about success and the money, pay the $2000 for pre baiting;) that is a good investment to hopefully have cats on bait when you get there or at least be that many days ahead in the process. If you want the best likely hood of success for the lowest overall cost, pay for the pre-baiting.

Again I'd personally likely not choose pre baiting but rather add a few days on if needed. I'd want the full experience.

And I would at least inquire about getting dogs in. The first time was because the Outfitter was having problems getting a leopard but had trail camera photos. I really enjoyed the proactive approach and excitement of hunting with dogs. And I just like dogs;) That of course gets expensive but it is one of those get what you pay for things:)

I assume you will encounter elephants. Probably lots. Possibly rhino. Possibly lion. This should be a fantastic hunt. In fact if I had the time to do it, I'd be talking directly about booking instead of typing this... haha

Sounds like an epic hunt opportunity. I will be in Limpopo in mid June anyway on my 2nd safari and first DG safari, but am not sure I want to sit around for two weeks just waiting to go to Moz. Still interesting for sure. I have heard of your outfit and the feedback was positive.

I do have a relevant question: Does the leopard hunt fee package of $19,875 include any bait animals for the hunt? Or are they an extra ala cart item that is needed but not included? It is an important distinction. I see that the client can pay the $2000 pre-bait fee. Does that price include the bait animal(s)?

To me, it would be more fun and complete as a package if the client hunts and harvests the bait animals also, but I am just trying to understand the costs associated with such?

Two weeks could be just enough time for an elephant hunt in between;) Or plenty to do a night hunt and some sight seeing!

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for the interest and thoughtful questions regarding the cancellation Leopard hunt with Tsala Safaris in Mozambique. We're glad to see experienced hunters like yourselves engaging with the opportunity—we know how meaningful it is when you're searching for something truly wild and authentic.

We can certainly work around the dates to your convenience.

Let me paint a clearer picture of what makes this hunt, and especially our area, so special:

Our Area: The Real Old Africa

Tsala Safaris operates a family-owned and run area in the remote southern reaches of Mozambique, bordering Zimbabwe’s famed Gonarezhou National Park and the Save River. This is not a fenced block or a leased piece of land—we own and actively manage over 120,000 acres of wilderness that forms part of a massive 2-million-acre unfenced ecosystem. Animals roam freely between Mozambique and Zimbabwe, including Leopard, Elephant, Lion, and Buffalo.

If you’re looking for a “National Geographic” setting—rolling Mopane forests, open savannahs with huge Baobab trees and the Big Five in their natural habitat—this is it. You will encounter elephants and lots of them. You may hear lions at night. This is raw, untamed Africa at its finest. On this note with our last clients in camp , about two weeks ago , while looking for buffalo tracks came upon a leopard actively hunting a porcupine during the middle of the day.

Leopard Hunting Details

We tailor our Leopard hunts based on the client’s preferences, experience, and goals. Here are some key points:

  • Success Rate & Opportunity: Our area has a very healthy, naturally occurring Leopard population, maybe not as much a Niassa, but due to our dedicated pre-baiting and active management, the area enjoy's a very good success rate. Our shot opportunity is strong, especially when pre-baiting is utilized. This is hunting after all and no success can be guarantee although I can assure everyone that no stone will be left unturned to make this a successful safari.
  • Size of Leopard: We don't get the huge cattle raiding monsters cats like some area's in Botswana or Namibia but we do get very good representative cats. These cats are truly wild and travers a huge area.
  • Importable to USA: Yes, fully importable under current U.S. Fish & Wildlife regulations.
  • Pre-Baiting ($2,000 optional): This fee covers all baiting prior to your arrival. It’s optional—but highly recommended if your time is limited and you want to hit the ground running with cats already working baits.
  • Number of Baits: During the hunt, we typically have 6 – 8 active bait sites going at all times, depending on sign and conditions.

On Bait Animals

  • Bait animals are not included in the $19,875 package, but are offered at 50% of trophy fee.
  • If you'd prefer to hunt your own bait, you’re welcome to do so and we'll plan accordingly. This is especially meaningful for clients who want the full immersive experience.
  • Alternatively, if you want to focus solely on the Leopard, we can pre-source bait through our team ahead of your arrival.

Dogs

We can certainly utilise dogs if available.Pre baiting or baiting is also recommended when using dogs.We usually use Gavin Lipjes , without a doubt the best to use for leopards with dogs.

Extra Days & Flexibility

You’re welcome to add additional days at $850/day if needed. This allows flexibility and gives you more time to enjoy the area or pursue other species like Buffalo or plains game. Many of our hunters combine this with Buffalo—which, as mentioned, also makes for excellent bait.

Overnight Transfer Option ($200pp):

Due to the remote nature of our camp, we recommend an overnight en route stay, especially when crossing the border at Pafuri (within Kruger National Park). We either stay in Pafuri camp or just across the border in Mozambique on the Limpopo River. This eases travel fatigue, allows a smoother border crossing, and ensures you arrive rested and ready to hunt. However, it’s optional—if schedules and logistics allow, we can go straight through.

Giving Back & Local Involvement

One final point we’re proud of: Tsala Safaris gives back. This isn’t a fly-in, fly-out operation. We employ local staff, support local schools, clinics, and conservation initiatives. When you hunt with us, you’re contributing directly to preserving this wilderness and uplifting the people who live alongside it.

Feel free to reach out directly via message or email if you want to discuss your specific goals, dates, or how we can shape the hunt to suit your style.

Hope to see one of you join us under the Mopane canopy soon.

Warm regards,
Rouan Nel

I have not hunted leopard, but I am planning to hunt one a few years from now. I have done a lot of research on these hunts, and nothing is ever certain in wild Africa, particularly with leopard. I have a friend that had to take several trips before he was finally able to bag a leopard. All of this is my way of saying: pay for the pre-baiting, you're going to want any edge you can get with a leopard.

How is the travel after arriving in JNB? Drive time?

Good Afternoon ACM,

Thank you for your message.

For clients arriving from the U.S., the most common international flights typically land in Johannesburg in the early evening. If you’re coming from Europe, there are several flight options available depending on your preferred airline and connection city.

If arriving from the U.S. in the evening, we will personally meet you at O.R. Tambo International Airport. From there, you have two options for the overnight:

  1. Overnight in/near Johannesburg – Convenient and comfortable, allowing you to rest before an early morning departure.
  2. Drive a few hours out of Johannesburg – This gets you away from the city and shortens the next day's travel.
The following morning, we’ll set off early for camp. Depending on the border process and rifle clearance on the Mozambique side, the journey from Johannesburg takes approximately 12 hours in total.

We typically cross at the Pafuri border post, which is situated inside Kruger National Park, and then cross the Limpopo River into Mozambique. The drive through South Africa is entirely on excellent paved roads. Once across the border into Mozambique, the roads become more rugged—adding to the sense of entering a truly remote and wild region.

As an added option, some clients choose to overnight either inside Kruger Park itself or just across the border on the Mozambique side, depending on timing and logistics. We're happy to assist in coordinating whichever option best suits your schedule and travel preferences.

Warm regards,

Rouan

I have to say this seems like an awesome deal with an outfit that has multiple excellent reviews. If I wasn’t already heading to Africa for 5 weeks I would book it without reservations and opt for the pre baiting.

Good Day Sir

Yes you can certainly participate in the whole process from the start where the $2000 pre baiting fee includes animals that can be taken by the client from the start.I would recommend that if you chose to do this we add at least 2 hunting days.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best regards

Rouan

This is one of those times, I wish I wasn’t already booked for a hunt

Back After a Long Time – Hello Again!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been a member since 2015 but haven’t been active since 2017. Life got busy, especially with building my second business. Still, I’ve kept my passion for hunting and followed things from afar. Now that I have more time, I’m excited to reconnect, contribute, and be part of the community again.

All the best,
ANDY

I'd like a bag of 100. I could actually pick it up since I'm in North Irving, but if you prefer, shipping it is fine.
