If so, which countries allow it, and what are the steps or requirements?

Welcome to AH, a thread in the Intro&Greets forum to say a bit more about yourself would be a good idea.

To answer your question to some degree, yes a foreign born individual can become a PH in at least a few countries. Tanzania has American PHs as well as others not born in Tanzania. Mozambique, Zambia and Cameroon are others that I believe will allow non-citizens to PH. As for the requirements, that I do not know.

There are other countries where it is not possible, Zimbabwe and RSA come to mind, presuming nothing has changed there.

This is a good question for @spike.t and @BULLET SAFARIS.

I have a coworker from Tanzania and he recommends I look at Mozambique
This is the form letter that you get , a language barrier is a small obstacle
Also they are very vague about whether my USCG captains license would be valid to pilot a barge

a professional hunter in Mozambique, one needs a valid professional hunting card, a firearm license, and a hunting license. Additionally, individuals require a certificate from a recognized institution and may need to apply for a CITES permit for certain species. Foreign hunters also need a valid passport and may require a visa.

Detailed Requirements:
  • Professional Hunting Card: This card certifies that the holder has the necessary qualifications and experience to operate as a professional hunter in Mozambique.

  • Firearm License: A license to use and carry firearms is required.

  • Hunting License: A general hunting license, plus a license for each species you intend to hunt, is necessary.

  • Age Requirement: Must be 18 years or older.

  • Passport: For foreign hunters, a certified scanned copy of their passport is required.

  • Photographs: Two passport-sized photos are needed.

  • ID/Passport Copy: A copy of a national ID for citizens or a copy of the passport for foreign citizens.

  • CITES Permit: A CITES permit may be required for certain species, including elephant and leopard.

  • Declaration of Fitness: A declaration stating the applicant is mentally fit and free from physical deficiencies that might compromise safety.

  • Firearm Information: Provide details of the firearm (make, caliber, serial number).

Most of my hunts are solo — just me, my rifle, and a good map. Sometimes I tag along with an old buddy for a week in Zimbabwe or South Africa, but more often than not, it’s just me.
Big fan of classic hunting — bolt-action rifles, old-school tracking, and taking the time to really be in the moment.
Just did a podcast, check it out if interested!
