Buffalo caliber advice

Since we can not agree on proper caliber(s)/weaponry. Could we atleast agree upon the proper transportation that should be used while out in the field chasing the buff?

Hahahaha now that's funny
Are you reading this Red Leg lol

Concur with your 22LR penetration concern. What we have noticed is my 22LR bounces off my mild steel spinner target while my 17 HMR puts holes in it. We think the great penetration from the 17 is due to the sharp pointy plastic tips. You might consider the 17 or look for a 22 with those proven sharp pointy plastic points.

We get full penetration on sage rats with that load in my 17HMR. They are testy buggers if not hit with a good bullet. If wounded they are known to be more dangerous than the common mouse, albeit about 25% larger.

17HMR does punch a hole through a steel helmet at 50m.

Light them on fire so it sticks better when they hit.
And a tasty treat while you take pictures.
Having had the molten marshmallow stuck to my skin like napalm, this may just work! While Mr. Buff is rolling around trying to get that stuff to quit scalding him, slide right in and finish him with the file on your leatherman!

No, wait a second, I watched the video again. It’s the hunter in the wounded Cape Buffalo video with the crossbow!

After having a look at the video again, I firmly believe the correct weapon would be a 9mm pistol. The idea would be to wait for the buffalo to be almost on top of you. Then fall backwards and let the buff run over you. During this you draw the pistol and empty you magazine into the buff chest cavavity. You alternate one bullets with one hollow one FMJ ( for penetraion ). If you can shoot fast enough the nett effect would be like one x 2,108 gr bullet ( 17 x 124 gr ) hitting the buff. Problem solved.
Slower shooting can create a perforation line that will assist in the skinning process.
Should you see that thing are turning badly, the 9mm can be used to shoot your buddy in the knee to slow him down.

you want the one that melts in her mouth and not in her hand

I am in need of a bit of advice, recent events have shown my ignorance or lack of full understanding concerning appropriate calibers and rifles for buff hunting.

I was determined and dead set on using my 416rigby with peregrine 400gr copper expanding and brass solids for buff this year in luangwa.
However...
I have just learnt that I know jack sh*t and require the resourceful knowledge of the AH community to guide me in the right direction.

So now that I have deemed the 416 excess to requirements in terms of caliber and stopping power, which of the following two options would you guys recommend and once your caliber recommendation is given, what bullet choice would you use?
If there is a reasonable option other than the 2 calibers I have available, let me know your thoughts. I have until the end of October when the hunt is scheduled so that gives me at least till the day before to acquire the rifle and ammo. No need to worry about testing, I can always sight it I once I get to the valley.

Options are
1) 243 Springfield improved
2) 30-06 weatherby magnum
.416 is perfect for what you are doing on your buff hunt.

Well seriously, if a .22 is a viable option on leopard, wouldn’t you just step up to a .22 magnum on buff? And if that is the case do I take my .458 Lott along just in Case we are short firewood and a jack handle?

Nice one. I guess the 22 magnum is an excellent choice on how to die by an angry critter.

Gentlemen, Gentlemen! Anyone who has enough sense to pour piss out of a boot knows that the best weight retention comes from the chewy nuget center core surrounded by chocolate but it must be gas checked!!

Careful I have a patent on that one already....:E Nono:.......

You bunch of pansies

I want to know who's going to volunteer to put the halter on the Buffalo! I know Pete can handle it after that.

Is it catch and release if you just take the horns?

You volunteering to put the halter on Wayne?
I promise to do the rest of you do :ROFLMAO:

Come on, Pete, you know that real men hunt buffalo with a knife :D

You could do what Crocodile Dundee did, but in case of a charge I saw a 22 hornet double rifle on YouTube. It’s too much really but a good stopper!
