Limit for big game I didn't know about. Just thought people didn't like hauling extra weight on elk hunts. Honestly it's pretty rare situation where you need to get second shot out faster than one can with a bolt gun. Usually the limiting factor is being able to get the crosshair back on the target.

Yes. The major advantage of a semi auto rifle OR shotgun is the reduction of felt recoil. When shooting heavy calibered rifles or multi shots with 3-3.5” waterfowl shotgun loads, the reduced recoil is welcomed. One of my hunting friends here has a Browning BAR .300WM for that very reason. The rifle is heavy though, so I choose to hunt with my Browning A Bolt .338WM. Where legal, the semi autos have their place. To each their own.

The Blaser R8 seems to be a very well designed rifle from everything I’ve read about it here on AH. Don’t know for sure, because I’ve NEVER seen ONE in thirty plus years of hunting/gun shows/gun stores, etc. Neither has ANY other hunter I’ve ever hunted with or anyone else I’ve spoken with hunting here in Colorado. In fact, nobody has ever heard of the Blaser brand here that I’ve spoken to for the most part! It seems to be a “one percenter” or less niche rifle brand as well built as it is, probably due to it’s cost? On the other hand, Savage is a well known brand. Whether this new Savage straight pull actioned rifle is worth a damn or not, I predict they will sell a BUNCH of them to the millennial, 6.5 “man bun” crowd, due to it’s innovativeness and price point. I wouldn’t buy one cause I’m older and like traditional bolt actions, but then again, I’m not the majority millennial firearms buyers of today. Wish I had bought some Savage stock!

Complains about this RH world we live in constantly.
Let's hope Savage comes out with LH ejection as well.
Even I would like to see a TRUE left handed rifle like this.

Well, I’ve never seen a used Blaser R8 or R93 for sale at 1k? But your right, the specialized target/prairie dog/fun guns could be several thousand dollars. But, for the average millennial “I want to by an innovative hunting rifle”, will buy a 1k Savage pull bolt over a 1k “old technology “ rifle. Same with cell phones, cars, home alarms, etc. I’ve seen it time and time again.

Sorry but I think I'll stick with my old trusty original straight pull, the one I've had since I was sixteen. My good old Rem. 760 in 30-06!

Funny you should say that, but off this topic and for another thread (which I’ll start), is how many hunters do you know or have spoken with, have used ANY straight pull OR CRF actioned hunting rifles? In thirty plus years of hunting in the US, I know of NONE, unless a Ruger M77 would be considered a “semi” CRF? As a side note, my wife’s relatives in PA all use Remington 760s or 7600s, cause semi autos aren’t legal there. Wait, in 1996, my wife's uncle did hunt elk with us and he had a pre '64 Winchester in .300WM. I don't think he had ever shot it before, but hey, it was in camp so I'll count it.

Yep that's true a lot of us PA boys love their 760's.

I bet Savage will sell a lot of these. Which will push other American manufacturers to also make a straight pull. Overall I see this as a good thing!

it would be a good excuse for him to get a new gun.

I could see getting one for a couple reasons.

First I help some local kids on hunting trips. A loaner rifle that could be switched to (sort of) left handed would be nice. I have at least one left handed shooter.

Second semi autos are popular in the US but sadly they are getting more regulated in some areas and might be regulated nationally at some point. IF this straight pull is fast and reliable it could be a good substitute. I’d love to see a scout rifle model with a detachable magazine and a rail for mountain a light.

You keep talking dirty to me I may have to bitch slap you. I'll think about getting that when you get a 35 Whelen barrel for your R8 and hell freezes over. I would prefer to have my toe nails pulled out than have that cartridge inflicted on my person.
It ain't a 25 so it don't count in my books.

Not sure about the Savage system.
But it looks like it's based loosely on the Heym SR30.
The Heym was tested to 110,000 psi.
It was also available in 9.3x62 and 375RUGER.

Who knows? If it's a sales winner, larger cartridges/calibers could be offered. When it comes to firearms in the U.S., we live in some interesting and innovative times.

Been going to SHOT and/or setting up there for over a decade. This is a weird feeling.

Hard to judge Savage from the past. Companies learn and create better products. Not a company out there that hasn't done somethings wrong. The companies that remain are the ones who learned, rectified, and bettered.

This rifle would definitely be on my top list of things to look at at either SCI or DSC this year. Now we will never know what special things we would have purchased at the shows. Being able to actually handle a firearm is the selling point for me, some rifles look neat, but feel cheap or wrong in some way. I suspect this Savage, in mere seconds, will make a clear indication one way or the other.

Im not sure thee will be much of a market for their "predator" variant.. they might sell a few... but if they are targeting the typical US predator hunter that prefers a large detachable magazine.. its going to be tough to convince John Doe to buy this rather than an AR15 or AR10 type platform in any location other than those that prohibit semi autos or MSR's in hunting..

That said... Both their "big game" and "hog hunter" are interesting to me.. Once they hit the shelves, I'll have to go put hands on one and see what I think.... Hopefully more caliber offerings will be available over time, and barrel swaps will be easy enough... If that comes to pass... there might actually be a significant amount of market space for this thing...

MSRP $1,449.00. I don’t know if that’s good or bad as far as component quality goes? But, unlike the R8, maybe somebody here might have one in stock someday that I could actually see and touch in person? I can always dream!
