Anyone use the .270 Winchester?

when I first got to Montana (1970) I hunted elk with my 243. 105 g Speer spitzers at 3000 fps worked fine as long as the shots were inside 200 yards and broadside. When i started guiding in the Bob Marshall the outfitter made me trade up to a 270. Grizzlies were abundant then and still legal to hunt (25 tags / year). I thought the 270 was a cannon lol!

The best I have ever been able to get with 100s in a few 243 that I have loaded for mates didn't even crack the 2,850 mark, all were around 2,800fps with a MAX charge of H4831SC and 22 inch barrels. The book says they should have been around the 2,950fps but be stuffed If'n I could get it
I'm not doubting your velocity but I can't get it.

but i have to confess i have one too ! and a 6.5 manbun, we should start a 243 thread & see how many others

I wouldn't even give it to a lady. A 250 Savage or 257 Roberts yes but NEVER NEVER that horrible little round.

If my memory serves me well. I used Remington cases, Remington non magnum primers and 43.5g of IMR4350. It might have been "warmish" please don't try this load in your rifle unless you work up slowly and check for signs of pressure going up .5g at a time. All barrels are different. What worked in mine might be very hot in yours.

When I had my .243, the only thing I used the 87gr bullets on were coyotes, and prairie dogs.
Now, when I was going after antelope and deer, I always used 100 gr - 105 gr bullets.
Anyone who would use 87 gr bullets for deer hunting needs to have their head examined! Those bullets will only blow up on the skin of any big game animal, and only leave a gaping hole that will fester, and eventually killing the poor animal, slowly, and cruelly.

In my humble opinion they would be about perfect but when I tell people of the benefits on game all I get is:- the 87gn shoots faster and flatter. All I do is ask if you want speed or dead game because you ain't killing much. I shake my head and walk off. One friend uses the 80gn ttsx to good effect on fallow dear and pigs but that bullet actually works. Unfortunately you can't educate idiots ( or shoot them).

Sounds like the problem is the shooters choosing the wrong bullets and not the caliber itself. The .243 is a very common and effective deer caliber here and everyone I know uses 100 grains. But hey, everybody needs to have a caliber to hate on!

So what does that do that a fast 25 won't do. An 87 grain out of my 25 a almost 3,800 makes small game jigsaws, so why the need for the 270.

With 100gn bullets it may work 90% of the time with ideal shots. In Australia most clowns that own a 243 use the 87 grainers that turn it into a great wounding caliber.

We all should try to get Bob Nelson to love the 243 WIN for it is really a great cartridge my
daughter has a Weatherby Vanguard ladies edition, she has wacked many a pig &
goat & fox using 100 grain bullets. I like shooting it too! My eldest son has a Winchester
mod 70 featherweight in 243 also. his wife used it before they had kids.

I don’t know if you know Bob, but the closer to sea level you are, the slower the bullets go. Where I am here in Texas, velocities are quite mundane, because I’m close to sea level. When I used to live up in the mountains of Wyoming, the faster the bullets went. Less air, less drag. Plus no humidity.
Humidity helps slow bullets down as well.

I know this started as a 270 thread but i thought i would show my 2 6mm rifles a Weatherby MK5 240 WM & a Weatherby Vanguard 243 win both with 24 inch barrels
i mostly use 100 grain Speer grand slams & 100 grain Taipan bullets.

What will the 240 Weatherby do that a cheap 24 inch barrel S2 Weatherby in 25/06 won't do just as good and cheaper.
