9.3x62

I’ve currently got 2 rifles in 9.3 x 62. One is on the Blaser R8 platform which IMO would come close to being the perfect North American big game rifle. And an old, but nice FN commercial.

If I was buying another rifle in that caliber I’d buy it in Rigby HS. I think that rifle would come very close to being the ideal rifle for African Plains game. And, if necessary it could probably handle the big stuff.

Between the R8 and the HS I’d have most situations covered.

In about 7 months I'm headed back to Africa to finally have my dream hunt, for a buffalo! After much research and load development I'll be taking my 9.3X62. Swift A-Frames for softs and Woodleigh Hydro solids. Both chronograph at 2400fps from a 22 inch barrel and shoot to same point of aim. The 9.3X62 has been used to take buffalo since 1905. Is it a stopping rifle? No, but proper shot placement is everything. Screw up that first shot and things get very intense very quickly to say the least.

Better make sure your Safari operator and PH are ok because in SA it is not legal. Other countries I do not know. I would like to use mine on my next trip if the PH is ok with it

First whitetail from several years ago with my Ruger African with Geco 255 gr Teilmantel bullet. I really like the caliber and rifle. Last day of Kentucky rifle season 2020. Used this same combination during 2021 with the same result. I would like to see the GECO factory ammo available again here in the USA.

I only have its big brother - 9.3X64B, more of a good thing!
Enfield P14 action with Timney trigger, Walther barrel fitted by Jack Miller, I sportorised the Enfield and rust blued. Stock was done by Geoff Slee using Dargo walnut from Roger Vardy.

My only 9.3X62 is an H. Mahillon built, I believe, in the ‘30s
Mahillon made some very fine rifles!

Congrats to this great gun!
One can see somebody with sense created this gun!
Nice stock, great express sights and I bet, the trigger is also perfect.
The most interesting feature I find is the thicker barrel next to the 98 action!
For the unexperienced, it looks like cosmetics, but it does a hell of a good to the gun.
It brings weight to soften recoil and a good balance when bringing it up because the weight is right in the middle. A dream for snapshots and freehand if needed.

I've already been in touch with my outfitter/PH. As long as you are hunting private land the 9.3 is good to go. That said, should the hunt take me to a different block then I'm leaning toward my pre-64 M70 in 375 H&H. I really would like to use my 9.3 but some times the buffalo are found in other areas rather than where you want them to be. The 9.3 is legal in more areas/countries being grandfathered in. But the laws differ from country to country. Thanks for the heads up and input.

This is my Blaser R8 Professional in 9.3x62. This picture is from when @TOBY458 had it for sale, and I ended up buying.

I cannot recommend a trip on Buff with a 9,3x62 for a "dream hunt".
It's always the argument, that the 9,3 was actually created for Big Game. But that's not true.
It was designed for the poor man (mostly farmers), who needed a gun for everything out there in the african wide open to fill the pot, and/or possibly being saved from getting eaten or trampled to death from african nature. It was the absolut minimum for the worst maximum.
Those guys, buying in these days a 9,3, mostly didn't have the funds, to buy Rigby, Purdy or W&R!
I'm sure, otherwise they would have.
And, 9,3 was for sure better than the 7x57 in military carbins, which were earlier the most common used gun around there.

Now things are a bit different. Today the buffalo herds know exactly what is going on, if perceiveing oversea after shave! That brings up adrenalin level in the blood of those black monsters, and as I experienced myself, that stirrs up the pott for unbelievable things, which will happen, if that shot You made, is even on the right spot. Those buffs are the black version of superman. If wounded, double that! Even with a torn apart heart, those buffs don't stop, if warmed up really good.
Art Alphin from A-Square said it already years ago: Use always enough gun!

My experience is, that two procedures will be most successful:
1. Use a real big bullet to let loose Your buff so much blood, that the adrenalin can't circulate anymore or
2. Shoot him in the head for instant kill. Which is another challenge.

You will learn, that shooting at a buff even full broad side is a tricky thing, better forget about the headshot and use really big bullets to do the more promising blood-run-empty-trick!
My personal advise would be minimum .416 upwards, better .458 settle. Remember, You are planing a "dream hunt" ?

Finishing a hunt in Zim, tomorrow.. all I’m telling you is what I experienced first hand. My bother and I used our 9.3x62 exclusively. I used 286g A Frames (hand loads hopped up pretty stiff w Big Game powder) and 320g Woodleigh solids, shooting same spot. I was almost all one shot kills on (2) buff, a sable, and 2 tiny ten. My brother was using 250g Barnes X at 2650, taking a buff, big eland, bush bush and baboon. I have hunted a lot w a .375HH, and am here to tell you that my experience, the less recoil and better penetration that the 9.3x62 offers, I’d take the 9.3x62 over .375HH if forced to pick. I’m just a more accurate shot without expectation of adverse recoil ( which neither really kick… just the 9.3, less). Splitting hairs and all good- anything Africa Hunting is all good!

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
