The late Ken Waters wrote a Pet Loads article in the .416 Taylor in the July 1974 issue of Handloader.
He used cases formed from .458 Winchester brass and Winchester 120 (standard) primers. Velocities taken from a 24" barrel. Colorado bullets were ordinary jacketed soft-points. Comments are his.

I checked Loaddata.com and did not find any 350gr loads listed for IMR 4320 or 4166.

VARGET, H4895, RL15, and VV N140 are listed, along with several Accurate brand powders.

Thank you for taking a look. It’s hard to find much info on IMR 4166 for anything, but it is my understanding it’s burn rate is close to Varget.

I have test targets and loads which I can post later. The long and short of it is the old IMR loads are a bit more accurate but 100 to 200 ft per second slower, so for DG I opted for the 2450 feet per second using Varget with swift-a-frames and Barnes banded solids shooting 1-in groups. I developed an AA load that produced 2550 feet per second but it was punishing and unnecessary. Can also locate some good 350 grain loads for you...

69gr of IMR4064 under a 400gr TSX gets me just over 2300 fps and right at MOA accuracy… it’s my go-to load for my 416T

Ok, here's one showing the accuracy of the IMR loads (this one was just over 2,300 fps using Nos PTs. When the load was duplicated using 400 gr Swift A-Frames, the group size opened up to 1".) I'd have no issue using the NPs in N. America!

Here's one showing groups using 77 grains of Varget the swift-a-frames still group very well and the Barnes solid shoots an inch higher and 10 ft per second faster. 2450 to 2460 ft per second. I see from test targets I tried just about every powder suitable for the 458 case and selected this one because the velocity was perfect and because the softs printed similarly to the solids.

These are the types of powders that work best in the 458 case, as they're more dense...
I know for a fact you could get the 350s going 2600 fps if desired, but I'd not use them on DG. I know Varget would also work well in the 80 gr dep't.

One more, to show you the results of earlier tests. Looking at the test targets, I was reminded that the group sizes expanded to 1.5-2" when max loads were used w/ RL 15 and IMR 4320, thus Varget was selected. I'm sure same could be achieved using less TAC or AA powder (which achieved max Vs with 1" groups.) Again, anything suitable for the 458 win case is good for the Taylor.

Wood chucks and black bear. I am just wanting to load something a little easier and cheaper that will allow me to get more comfortable with the rifle.

A few custom mfrs have factory ammo available...I'm thinking Double-tap has a 350 gr option available. Should be pleasant shooting. I test EVERY accurized gun out on woodchucks, first! .375 HH and .338 A-Sq were most entertaining.

My 416 Taylor is a supposedly “improved” version. All I can tell is a sharper shoulder and body taper blowed out. Anyways it’s on a 25.5” barrel interarms mark X, and is extremely accurate. I’d have to look at my loads to know the charges for sure, which they will prolly be different from yours. I use IMR 4166 with the 300 gr TSX at 2640 fps, and it has been extremely accurate and great on whitetail. My favorite whitetail load was the 350 gr Speer mag tip with RL15 at 2610 fps, and it was devastating on deer. I’ll be honest when working up my loads I used quick load for 416 Taylor, and slowly worked up during summer temps looking for pressure. I really like the 350 gr loads, but the 300 TSX are pretty easy to find still, especially to practice on smaller game anyways.

I’ve been using Taylor load data for my 416WSM build. I got info from Hand loader Magazine and their LoadData section. May have to expand powder selection, IMR3031,W748, H4895 are all working great for me, extrapolated from Taylor loads.

Older thread, but, if any great 416 Taylor shooters are still on the lookout for good loads here's mine, I use CFE-223 for a true and safe 2400 fps in my 98 Mauser actioned 416 Taylor if one wants it.

Old school 400gr Hornady softs and solids along with the 400gr Partition.

One can start at 70grs CFE-223 and work up to what you and your rifle like, CCI-250 or FED-215 primers, have never seen a difference in accuracy, velocity or extreme spreads with either.

Proper head stamped cases for a traveling hunt from A-Square, Jamison and Quality Cartridge yield same results, as do necked up RP 338 Win Mag cases albeit a bit short.

Not even sure what action my rifle was built on, it has the British crown on the side of the action, it's plenty stout, feeds and functions like greased glass, it wears a 24 inch barrel, great and useful cartridge that could be included in the original short magnum cartridge lineup.
