Good day all. Relatively new member here from TX and haven't posted much yet. I have a Ruger No. 1 in 416 RM and have been going back and forth on the feasibility of a 1 rifle safari, for whenever I can make it to Africa. I have a Ruger M77 in 300 WM, which would be fine to take with the 416 RM, but I am curious about the different lighter grain loads for the 416.

I do not handload, so my choices of factory ammunition are limited, primarily to the 400gr @ 2400fps variety, which I know will work well for any large bodied mammal or DG. I have recently stumbled upon Hendershots custom ammunition and was wondering if anyone had any experience with the company. Specifically, I see they have a load for 300gr TSX @ 2800fps, which I think would have outstanding performance on larger plains game (as it would effectively mimic a 375 wby MV with the same grain bullet).

Very interested to see if anyone has used this particular company/load, or has handloaded for 416 RM with a 300gr at ~2800 fps and has any comments or feedback.

Thank you!

Will see nothing but positive feedback from Hindershot. They are a good company that makes great ammo.

If you just want to take your 416REM you can, your 300WM will take everything in Africa other than DG. The choice is up to you and what will put a smile on your face. Even with the 300gr in the 416REM it is not going to be a practical as a 300WM. My .02

Very reputable company and good quality

They make good ammo. Give them a call to discuss your specific needs. You will have more options available than buying online.

I would also recommend Superior Ammunition as well. You could go as light as 225 grain cutting edge safari raptors or 300 grain Shock Hammers, if that’s what your looking for.

I recently (2022) had Hendershots Custom Loading Services load me 100 rounds of 7x57mm Mauser by using Winchester Super X cases and 175Gr Hornady Interlock soft point bullets. I’m incredibly happy with their performance. From the 26” barrel of my Churchill Gun Makers Model Deluxe, I‘m consistently getting a velocity of 2491 fps over the chronograph. These loads have (so far) been downing Chital stags, Sambar stags & even Nilgai with absolute authority. I hope to use them for all of my plains game hunting purposes on my next Africa safari In 2024.

You won’t be unhappy with the quality of Hendershots custom ammunition.

They are great to work with. I needed some extra rounds for my 404J weeks before my trip last September. They turned it around on a weekend. At the time they did not have brass or Swift AFrames. I was able to acquire those components from the great folks here on AH and Hendershots did the rest. Would not hesitate. They will answer all of your questions.

I live about 40-50 minutes from them, they're always hunting for bullets and cases now days. It's funny they're so well known being that they're just a local shop to me.

Their ammo is top end, but it isn't anything that you couldn't assemble at home. Wonderful if you just need a few boxes for a hard to find cartridge, or want to sample an odd loading.

Since I stopped reloading all I use is Hendershots. If you want To take your 416 use it and shoot the same bullet for everything. Dead is dead, no such thing as overkill.

Thank you all for the great feedback. Seems like the consensus is that Hendershots is a great company with a good product. I also appreciate the other opinions on bullet selection and advice for which rifle(s) to bring. Thanks!

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
