375 Plus

I have owned both 375 weatherby and 375 H&H. Kept the H&H.

Your 375 H&H is really all you need in the 375 cal. It has been taking game since the early 1900's.

If you must in your mind feel that a few more FPS will make you feel better, and more confident the 375 weatherby (Basically a 375 Ackley improved) step up to the 350-380gr bullets rather than more fps with the 300gr.

wow I stirred the hornets nest, FYI I do have a 416 and used it last trip that's why I say the 375 feels small. and my thoughts on it are the " one gun" issue. I have 350 grn Woodliegh loaded for it and I want long range plains game capability -- the perfect world. The Weatherby , being able to use the H&H ammo is interesting --thanks

Call me a broken record but if the 416 feels too big and the 375 feels too small...Goldilocks says the 404 would be just right...
Except that the actual bullet diameter of the 404 Jeffrey is actually .422, so bigger than any of the .416’s.

Not sure why, but I feel Under-gunned with my 375 H&H. thinking of rechambering to a 375 Weatherby or 375 RUM -- lets hear your thoughts or experiences on this. Thanks
you are not under gunned, don't rechamber the rifle. spend the money you save by not rechambering on really great bullets and practice.

Diameter is a bit larger with the 404, but the 416 Rigby shoots the same weight 400 grain bullet 150 fps faster resulting in more than 400 ft lbs of extra energy. The 416 has always been considered bigger although both are significantly bigger and more powerful than the 375.

If you want more stopping power for Africa, more velocity is not your best option. Shoot a heavier bullet at 24-2450 fps. Get a 416 Remington and shoot 400 grain bullets and your problems are over

I have a 416 WBY, Really like it but not really a Plains game deal -- in my opinion, I have a 416 Rem on order from Park West. I just picked up a nice 340 WBY Mag to turn into my long range thumper lol I think I have all the bases covered -- I hope.

The H&H is good to 300 yards no problem, what more could you need and so is the 416 Remington with 350 or 400 grain bullets

You aren’t going to just rechamber to 375 RUM - you’ll be throwing money into a deep hole by the time you find a smith keen enough to do it because the action will also need a hell of a lot of work.

The 375 Weatherby is the only bigger thing I would do, but if you need more POWAH, make sure you are loading your H&H to what it will actually do, versus using the anemic factory loads as the gauge. And if you still need more, buy a 416.

A 400 grain .416 bullet at 2,400 is incredibly effective on everything. It’s also flatter shooting out past 250 yards than many would expect. I used to shoot a load in my .416 Hoffman that went 2,510 but I’ve backed it off to 2,405 and like it better. And it’s just as effective.

If there is a problem with the .375 H&H, the problem isn't fixed by adding more velocity. It's fixed by using a heavier, larger diameter bullet.

BTW, there isn't a problem with the .375 H&H. Just be realistic if considering body shots on elephant or hippo.

If shooting PG at long range is the issue, the bigger .375s don't really make enough difference in ballistics or energy to be worth it. Out to 300, the .375 is adequate. Beyond that, you're already in a bit of a specialized situation (as far as Africa is concerned). Better to stick with something in the .300/.338 class with heavy bullets.

If you are feeling under gunned with a 375H&H at 2400 fps, moving the same bullet faster is not the answer.

The .416 caliber cartridges with a 400 grain premium bullet at 2400 fps could improve your confidence, albeit with additional recoil. The additional bullet weight hits them different. Although I will admit that you will be on the slippery slope of moving to a 458WM or LOTT and eventually the 500J.

That said, you really should concentrate on being able to place the first shot properly and using a premium bullet...regardless of the cartridge you are shooting.

I think I’d keep the 375 H&H and step up. I see a 500J, 505 Gibbs, or 577 in your future

Yeah, I dropped a moose in his tracks at 275 yards with 400 grain TSX from my 416 Remington, one shot. I am confident to 300 yards, beyond that velocity starts getting to low for proper expansion

I have a .375 H&H with which I took some PG, but had it along in case something happened to my .416 Ruger for DG and that no matter which rifle I had in my hands could handle buffalo..
I’ve since added a .375 Wby barrel for my Blaser. Same bullets as the H&H. Can use H&H ammo in a pinch. Flatter shooting: ~225-250 fps faster. More energy. Minimal increase in recoil.

Noah,
I might be interested in the 470 Woodleigh Softs if the price is right for the entire lot. Are you planning on going to the Tulsa Gunshow in November? If so, perhaps we could meet up.
