30-06...again

Yes, and works just fine in 180 gr moving at 2720 fps. Perfect mushroom on oryx at 300 yds….have shot 10 or so with the bullet. Very underrated bullet IMO.
Albeit a .270 my son used the 150gr speer hotcor in Africa, shot a blue Wildebeest, couple of warthogs and a Blesbok.

Impressive performance on the wildebeest, I was really surprised at how well this bullet worked and how well it penetrated. Quartering shot on the shoulder at 311 yards exit out through the back third, ran 25-30 yrads collapsed, Guide asked my son to put another in the neck for good measure, but it wasnt required really.

He has also taken a Tahr with that bullet a few fallow deer and various vermin.

I not believe that there is a difference in bone mass, body type and muscle/fat/hide between a blue wildebeest and a golden wildebeest. The two are distinguished by the genetics of their hair color. If it will work on a blue wildebeest, it will work on a golden wildebeest. No need to go up on caliber, bullet weight or muzzle velocity. 30-06 is fine as is a .308 with a heavy bullet. Have fun, good hunting and no need to spend additional money working up a new load.
anyone ever seen a golden wildebeest NOT on a game farm?

better put - Has anyone ever seen a golden wb in the wild, and not from breeding and trading?

Wonder how rare the mutation truly is?

Googled it once to find out. They are a natural phenomenon native, if I recall correctly, to the Orange Free State (or whatever it's name has been changed to). Check it out. The King's Wildebeest is an artificial creation ... I think.

Im aware, That was not my question!

Just wondering if anyone has actually seen one... in the wild

The color phases have all been pushed by "non natural" means. Those US hunters sure love color collections. Myself and many others on here not included...

I'm also not into that exotic color stuff. Pretty much a skull on the wall guy. I was offered a very nice golden wildebeest bull this last safari. Crazy bugger thought he was domestic cattle. Hung with the herd every day. I declined. It would be a shame for me to take him for just his skull. They do make a very nice shoulder mount. Surely another client could make better use of it. And I can't imagine he will make for a challenging stalk. :D

11B, my two sons and I just returned from SA where we used a .308 Win on plains game, including a big wildebeest and a really big kudu. The bullets were South African non-lead expanding that were loaded by our outfitter. They were 168 grain. We recovered two, one on the wildebeest and one a a very large kudu. I don’t have MV data but they were not loaded too fast. They expanded very well. I am no longer concerned about much after witnessing first hand how well the .308 worked with a 168 grain bullet.
The wildebeest that my son got was standing about 60 yds away sort of behind a small tree. The bullet hit a large branch, did not deflect, hit the wildebeest with a lung, heart shot. My outfitter likes a bit heavier bullet (keep in mind 168 gr is not too heavy. I asked him about this and he explained that he was more fearful of a small branch deflecting a light bullet than of anything else.
Keep in mind that this is only my one experience with wildebeest.
If I were to go through the trouble of importing my own rifle for the same hunt it would be my .308 loaded with N140 and 150 gr. Barnes TTSX BT. Loaded up to the published max.

I have 2 boxes of 165gr Partitions and for some reason 8 boxes of 165 and 180gr Accubonds laying around. Must have been for my 300WSM before I switched to Barnes.
They will kill it.

y'all hung up on this overthinking thing. All I asked was if either round was good for knocking down a wildebeest. I brought some numbers. Three pages into discussion, we have new powders, new bullets, different calibers, one group saying yes, they will work, another group saying no.

I think given the cost, time and ethics of hunting deserves some thought but I'm not the one overthinking this.
You're all good, My Brother! Shoot straight and be safe!!!

I saw a golden phase wildebeest “In the wild” in Limpopo province. I don’t know how well they will survive as they kind of stand out more due to the color.
I did a bit of research (Google and ChatGPT) about them. They are no larger or heavier boned than blue wildebeest. The genes only affect hair color. (Or is it fur

That is not an Echols rifle but a clone as it has the Echols stock and all the bells and whistles. Lon Paul who built the rifle does great work.
