I left Deer Lake, NL on Air Canada and my bags are tagged to San Antonio since United and Air Canada code share.
When I made my connection to Chicago in Toronto the gate agent would not let me board, said I cannot fly without my weapon.
They blamed it on Air Canada for not transferring the bags. I am now overnighting in Chicago at my expense and getting home 13 hours later. All of this for nearly $3k in flight fees.
When I asked if this was a United rule the gate agent said no, it’s a general rule. I told her two and a half weeks ago I flew home on Air Canada and my gun didn’t show up. So, I said why did they let me fly? Her answer, Air Canada does whatever they want up here.
Never again will I fly United with a firearm.

. I waited inside. "You know, we could confiscate that gun." Yes, and that would be appropriate under the circumstances. Then I'll drive home and return with the bill of sale. I also have a ton of old photos on my phone that support me owning the gun for years. "Okay, let's see some of those." They clearly enjoyed looking at a decade's worth of hunting photos. "Good enough. Sorry to be a bother." No problem. My fault. "Just don't let the guy at the window get in trouble for not asking me if I had any other guns." They agreed all swept under the rug. I paid my duty and that was that.
