Any Mauser Aficionados? My new 9.3x62

This past weekend at a local gun show I was fortunate enough to find a Mauser chambered in 9.3x62. Admittedly I know very little about Mauser actions/rifles and am hoping there are some more knowledge members who can shed some light on my recent purchase. The only real indicator marks on the rifle are the 98 on the action and the 9.3x62 on the barrel that appears to have been engraved by hand not stamped. I would be happy to upload kore pictures if it would help with identification! Thanks all!

The rifle also came with a serious box of components and so long as I can build a load that shoots it will be accompanying me to Namibia for plains game in conjunction with my wifes Sako 85 270win.

I intend to go shoot it this week once I am off work and am very excited to do so. I have been on the hunt for a rifle like this for the better part of 3 years, since Africa became a serious conversation with my wife and I. So far I am very impressed with the action, it is incredibly smooth. I have enough bullets and brass that came with it I should be able to establish what it will shoot best with!
 
You did alright! Looks like a 98 that was rebuilt post-war into the 9.3 before you. It still has what appears to be the remnants of waffenamt markings on it. Depending on what you gave for you, you may have came out like a bandit. Quality OG Mauser receivers are fantastic and fetch a fair amount. Happy for you!
 
15 months ago I had "0" 9.3x62...now I have 3 with another on the way. The caliber was on my "get list" for 20 years...then I discovered this forum and I've gone down the rabbit hole...and pretty deep too !!

What action is your rifle on...I can not read it.

As stated I border on the illiterate side when it comes to Mauser history though I am hoping to change that with this purchase and possibly more to come. Would you care to educate me on the waffenamt markings?
 
If you look towards the front receiver ring in the left side you should see what appears to be a small eagle. That’s an acceptance stamp used by Germany for military rifles. That’s a very generalized explanation but more or less the gist of it. The front ring on the top should also have a maker mark or maker code unless it was scrubbed (markings removed) post war.

The 9.3 has been on my list for about 4 years, I passed on a Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan last year because I wanted a more classic wood stock, still kicking myself for that one actually. Outside of Africa I have little use for the cartridge so I am unsure if another one will find it's way into my collection but I hope to be pursueded otherwise by this new addition.

The rifle is a Mauser 98, I know very little else about it at the moment hut am hoping this post will shed some light on what I have.

Great gun show score! You've a nicely sporterized German surplus action from about 1935-1944. I like the bolt handle work and stock.

The 9.3x62mm is a great round, sort of like a .366 Whelen Improved. Handloads easily.
It's approved for DG in some African countries. Will take big stuff here.

Well it’s not an original Orbendorf Mauser.
Cant tell from the pics but it may be original action and barrel?
Yours has a new stock and has been drilled and tapped with modern scope bases.
Nice rifle and fantastic caliber. I have had a few over the years.
 
Enjoy it! I have a modern Mauser (M12 Extreme) chambered in 9.3x62 - my first synthetic stocked rifle. Do I prefer it to “proper” wood and blue? No way. Do I find myself reaching for the Mauser above my other rifles anyway? All the time.

Lots of great bullets in .366” out there, I am running 250gr Accubonds at the moment which are working well for me but plenty heavier and lighter also to suit all needs. Hard to conceive a more versatile cartridge in my mind.

The rifle came with a box of assorted bullets, 5 boxes loaded ammo, 100 new brass and a die set. I have a ton of Lapua 185gr OT bullets I am not sure what I will use them on as well as an assortment of premium bullets from Barnes, swift, and nosler in the 250gr weights. I am excited to start working with the rifle and see what I can squeeze out of it!

Those 185gn Lapuas are much sturdier than they let on. I would have no issues running them on medium game (deer, pigs, goats etc)

It works very well on all North American big game from brown bears to whitetails and everything in between. Can be loaded with bullet weights from 192 to 320 grains. Not a thousand yard caliber but accurate to 400.
 
Nice find. I rarely see things that nice at gun shows anymore. You done good. The 9.3 is one of them do all cartridges. You can hunt deer, moose, elk, bears in NA as well as Kudu, Eland, Lion, and Buffalo in Africa. What is not to like. I have an old WWII era Mauser that was sporterized into a 270 as an early custom with a Douglas bbl. It also bears the German military proof mark with the Eagle on the left front receiver ring. It is a plain Jane rifle and not nearly as pretty as yours is. I hunted deer with it for 20yrs before I discovered Africa and shifted to heavier artillery.
