RJ Renner 303 British

That's a wow! Never warmed up to the old Lee Enfield SMLE's but that is a fine rifle. May it shoot as good as it looks!

This is my Brno zkk 7x57 that he did the stock work on! He does great work

I believe this is the rifle I am referring to. Very nicely done, but definitely looks like the grain was enhanced.

From what I was told, that is the original stock.

Hello all,
I recently had an old enfield 303 British that I had picked up at an estate sale for a couple hundred bucks. Someone had tried to turn it into a sporter along the way and it actually shot fairly well. After a model 70 375 reworked by Roger “RJ” Renner I got a wild hair and decided to send him my 303. After scouring the web, we found some pictures of some old Lee speed rifles by some of the well known outfits like Holland and Holland as well Rigby. Using these for an inspiration he created a pattern for the stock and then sourced a blank. His craftsmanship on the stock is second to none and it turned out better than I had expected. I was wanting it to have a true English look and he checked all of the boxes. For the metal, I loved the patina that a nearly 100 rifle had so he dismantled it and cleaned nearly a century worth of oil, dirt, and grease and got it functioning perfectly. He installed new iron sights but they are substantially easier to shoot than what was on it. I am very proud of my new rifle and it is a blast to shoot (no pun intended tended). There were grumblings of him being retired but I spoke with him over the weekend and he is far from it. I would recommend him to anyone looking for someone to work on a project rifle. This is my second rifle from him and both turned out extremely well.
@Saysaw0509
I can see that loaded with some nice Woodleigh 180 or 215gn RNSP or even some nice 180gn REM corelockt RNSP factory loads in the bush vld stalking plains game.
Classic

@bwanamrm
If'n it is tuned properly there's no reason it won't shoot sub 2" groups with open sights and a good shooter. Scoped and tuned they are capable of sub moa.

Did he make the stock from a scratch blank of wood or was it an already “pre-shaped” stock that he did the finishing touches on?

It is a 5 round mag. We sourced it new from a company in England and he patina’ed it to match the rifle
I did the same, very likely the same company, for my No 4 MK I a couple years ago. The magazine itself looked great; very nice job shortening the standard 10 shot,, installing a new floor plate and bluing. However mine does not feed well and is so bound up in the magazine well to be useless. Funny that I came across your posting just as I'm taking it to the 'smith to see if something can be done.

I'd be interested in your experience with the magazine.

Beautiful rifle!!! He has done two No 1’s for me. His work is outstanding.

Great looking rifles

I sporterized my No 4 MK I when I was a teenager. Bought the project gun for $18 in Minneapolis and brought it home on the bus. Restocked it with a semi-finished Fagen stock for $59 and did the metal work mostly in high school metal shop and my mothers basement. Took most of my deer with that thing.

Love what you had done with your rifle, and good to see that these old .303's are still out there and hunting.

That’s the link where I got mine… I haven’t had any issues with it feeding so far

Yup, same place. The feeding issue is likely just the lips on the mag needs a little tweaking. My biggest problem is the binding in the mag well. I removed the bottom metal to check that clearance and it seemed fine. Maybe the mag release spring is too strong, or the release itself need to be adjusted, or the "catch thingy" on the mag needs to be filed back. I can't figure it out; it's an old military rifle so it surprises me that there is a tolerance issue if that's what it is.

I can't say that I've ever really entertained the idea of a LE in 303, with having the American choice of 30-06 and/or 308. However, if I was to come across that rifle in my journeys, I would change my mind.

That is excellent.

Looks amazing. I was comparing photos to a military rifle. Did he remove the stripper clip guide? Or was that done prior to sending in? See attached for reference.

The early no1s didn't have a charger bridge at all. That's why they have such a streamlined look. Some also started with a dust cover that fitted to the bolt which really smoothed them out.
A nice fishbelly mag would look sweet too.
There was also another model, the SHT LE that had a model with a different bolt head with sliding attachment and a completely different action to facilitate charger loading.
Like this sporter of mine.
