Earlier this month I completed my first-ever black bear hunt and my first-ever boat-based hunt and it was simply one of the best things I've ever done. The hunt was in British Columbia and we lived on a slightly converted commercial fishing boat for 6 days. In the mornings we fished and put out/pulled in crab pots and prawn pots while scouting for black bear coming down to feed on the grassy banks next to the water. We used the main boat for perusing the coastline for bear as well as a jet boat and Zodiac for going up freshwater rivers, sometimes more than 20 miles a day. In the evenings we ate the absolute freshest salmon, crab and prawns...seafood that had been swimming in the water just a couple hours before. Starlink provided the internet on the boat so for 1-2 hours a day my work office was the back of the boat with the best window view!
For the bear I used my Steyr Custom Shop SM12 9.3x62 loaded with 200gr Stone Hammers at 2800fps. I was blessed to harvest two black bears, both at or over 400lb and approx. 7-feet in length. Both bears went 15 yards or less and dropped. I will definitely be doing this hunt again. Below are some pics from the hunt...hope you enjoy.
