I purchased a Mark X in 375 H&H to take on my next trip for a Buffalo. I saw this one online and kind of fell in love with the wood so I bought it.

I paid $1600 shipped to my FFL, I think I overpaid a little but my heart got the best of me on the wood and esthetics, which tickled my fancy.

It has quick detach scope mounts. It is missing the rear iron sights, which I do want to fix but I’m not sure on a suitable replacement, anyone have a good suggestion on replacement?

Overall just looking for thoughts on how bad I overpaid and on a suitable rear sight.

Thanks!

great rifle I have a early model in 375 you may need to open up ejected port just a little for extracting live rounds cleanly . All I have owned and shot in the last 40 years have been great shooters.
shoot it and enjoy , price you pay is not part of the big pitcher .

You did not overpay. That is a quality rifle, and a nicely done stock. If it was my rifle, I would replace the entire rear sight assembly with something from NECG:

https://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/products.php?cat=336

Alternatively, I would look for a fixed sight that fits the dovetail on the rear sight base. Looks to be a 3/8s dovetail, shouldn't be too hard to round up something that fits.

Something like this :

Definitely am leaning toward the flip up leafs or just a standard single flip up sight, I love them on my Ruger no 1s. My Question is on the flip up multi leaf sights how would I assure that they are the correct height for my rifle to be on target? I may be wrong but from what I can see they aren’t adjustable like most of the single flip up sights right?

I think your purchase price was likely right on the mark…the gun looks clean and well cared for… and the mark x has a solid reputation for accuracy, reliability, etc… they are well built guns..

My mark x in 22-250 is an absolute tack driver…

Congratulations!!! Beautiful rifle, and I believe you did well. Now, put a scope and share with us how it shoots (y)

I don’t think you over paid at all. Good looking rifle.
I would consider adding a barrel band sling point. The slung stud on the stock can be rough on the hand when shooting. It also allows the muzzle to carry lower.
As other have said the a rear sight from NECG will work. Although I always thought I wanted flip down sights. After using the rear sight on my Ruger Africa, I changed my mind.

Nice looking rifle. Paul Jaeger also invented and marketed what were later branded as Uncle Mikes sling swivels. His nephew, who was the workshop manager when Paul passed away, moved to New England and established NECG.
I suggest that you try out several types of back-sight and fore-sight before replacing the missing back-sight. It does not matter what I OR anyone else on this forum prefers to use. The back-sight has to work for you, every time you dry-fire this rifle and every time you send a bullet down range. Have fun.

They get filed down to make a custom job. Most of the “parts” like that get trimmed, honed, filed etc. to fit their new host rifle.

This is my opinion, so take it for what its worth to you. I have a strong dislike for flip up sights on a DG rifle, the rear sight should be fixed upright. Now a extra flip up leaf or two for longer ranges is classy, but not really practical. As far as the correct height, if the rear is not adjustable, you get a rear sight that is a bit taller than needed and file it down to regulate it. This is from NECG on choosing correct sight height: https://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/uploads/pdfs/Sight-Height-Calculations.pdf
Your rifle has a quick detachable scope mount, in my opinion it deserves quality iron sights.

I noticed a small crack in the stock on the left side ahead of the bolt stop. If you haven't yet, I would take a hard look at this and make sure the crack is stabilized prior to shooting your rifle. A crack in this location could be due to pressure points in receiver bedding, it would be a shame to have your stock crack further. See if the crack closes when the action screws are loosened, this would be a tell-tale sign that the action bedding is on a bind. Or the crack could be completely benign, possibly a result of thinned wood for side scope mount. Either way I would repair this with some quality epoxy. If the crack is due to improper bedding then obviously the bedding would need to be addressed.

Thank you for the comment! I am going to look into the NECG sights and talk to my gunsmith about it as well.
I am taking it to my local gunsmith who builds custom rifles and such to take a look over and give it a proper bedding.
The seller disclosed the small crack and said it was from the thinned wood for the scope mount. The wood right there is only an about a 1/4in thick where the crack is, having been thinned substantially for the side mount. The crack was already repaired and doesn’t move from loosening or tightening the action screws or by pressing on it, so I’m not too worried about it but again having it looked at before shooting either way(my hunt isn’t until next year so I have time to kill!).

Hello,

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.

Thank you for your time,

Andrew

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
