Had to share my recent experience with shipping idiocracy and initial (hopefully only) experience with firearm insurance. So knock on wood, over the last 3+ decades of traveling with firearms, buying and having them shipped, and selling and shipping myself, I’d never suffered a major issue…until now. Barely two weeks before departing for an elephant hunt, a fellow member asked about a Sterling Davenport 375 H&H that I owned and buying it. Although I originally planned to keep the rifle, I had subsequently acquired a Heym 88b in 375 Flanged where I really had no use for it, so agreed to sell it.

So we worked a deal, and dropped with my dealer to pack in hard case and ship. Roughly 5 days before I’m to depart, tracking shows delivered, and then I got a text with photos of the rifle in two separate pieces. Feeling totally defeated and sick, let the buyer know I’d be refunding and got the dealers information to contact and have him hold it while sorting steps with insurance.

Fortunately, I had started to keep a policy for a couple of my more expensive guns that I would travel with outside the the US, and as doubles seemed to follow me home, had expanded my policy with a new company in 2026, using Cole Cushman @GUN & TROPHY INSURANCE. Best decision of 2026 so far. I just imported a pair of Heyms from Germany and I’m talking with Cole he confirmed my coverage extended to new acquisitions even in transit and ones I might sell while in route to a buyer. The annual policy which, mine provides $350k coverage I think, maybe $400k, cost less than insuring the pair of 89b rifles from Germany and covered all my guns for the year.

So upon learning of the damaged stock, I reached out to Cole, he wrote me back and confirmed he had initialed a claim and some details as to what to expect from that point. I’m now like 4-days from departing for Zim. Very next morning I received a call from a young lady with Hanover insurance. She said she’d try to move things along as quickly as possible, but wouldn’t likely have it finished before left…which I just wanted to make sure they knew I’d not have service during that time.

I was worried that they might low ball a value since it was a custom rifle off a Winchester action, that it would take forever, and just readying myself for some kind of runaround. NOPE! Total opposite experience. Day I departed the Hanover rep called me and said she had to have an appraiser confirm value, but expected to have a number within the next 2-3 days. Two days later, morning I arrive in Harare, I receive an e-mail with their valuation and breakdown of claim payout with deductible and all plainly and understandingly set out. Their value was right in line with what I could find online, and higher than I’d originally expected. The email said if I was agreeable to the breakdown that I just needed to confirm and she would mail a check or could send a link for direct deposit. Since I was out of the country for a few weeks, I elect$d the direct deposit route and had the instruction email the following day, and funds in my account a couple days after that.

All told, I was made 100% whole, and with a fraction of the headache I’d expected. I cannot recommend Cole and @GUN & TROPHY INSURANCE enough….thank you Cole. Totally came through in a miserable, sickening experience and took solid care of me.

Glad I have a policy with them, will be taking my double as well as my M70 .375HH to RSA and Zim in a couple of months. Thanks for sharing this.

100% agree. If you travel, buy or sell guns. It’s a no brainer. Paying USPS, UPS, Fed Ex insurance is a waste of money. Buy an annual policy from Gun&Trophy for the price of shipping 1.5 guns.

Thanks for posting this, I also use Gun and Trophy to insure my firearms. Thankfully I've not had to file a claim, but this does give me some comfort

I was just curious, is this something that was possibly done intentionally? It seems odd like it was opened and broke ( assuming no damage to case) almost like the carrier did on purpose. -Anyway happy it worked out for you.

I have a policy with them. No claim experience, thankfully. Cole is a great guy to talk to, friendly, patient and knowledgeable. I've had a good experience with them thus far.

Thanks for this, I don't have insurance with them but will soon.

What you described is a cake walk compared to dealing with UPS insurance; they dragged it on for so long and tried every way to weasel out paying.

I had a broken stock also and the gun store fought the UPS for months. They never paid. I immediately bought a guns & Trophy policy and will never waste my money on shipping insurance again.

Same issue with UPS and a rare Blaser R8 that they never paid the claim. We spent weeks trying to resolve the issue, sending pictures, talking to UPS, talking to underwriter, etc. The claim was denied with no reason ever given. They just kept asking for more proof and closing the case without a response.

I will never buy UPS insurance again. I now prefer in-person transactions to avoid the headaches of shipping expensive firearms with neanderthals.

I will be getting this insurance when I go to SA 4/2027. This is great info but how the hell did this happen? Is there damage on the outside of the case?

I have had their insurance for 3 years seems like the only reputable company to actually do firearms for a reasonable price.

Agree re all the positive comments re Cole. I also had him insure my watches and wife’s jewelry. I’m traveling with a Heym double and a Rigby HS in 2 weeks. Just the peace of mind is well worth the cost.

Amazing to hear of an insurance company of any type with such good service. My experience is they never want to pay anything.

My one curiosity is how much your rates might increase when up for renewal.

I just signed up for one today. Thanks for the push to get it done.

Unfortunately I have had this same experience twice. Fortunately in both cases the sellers stepped up and made things right with no problems. One seller had insurance, the other did not.

Thank you for sharing this — and I'm sorry it took a damaged rifle to put us to the test. Situations like yours are exactly what we built Gun & Trophy for: high-value firearms, international travel, in-transit sales, no gaps. Really glad the Hanover team moved quickly and made you whole without the runaround. I hope the hunt was everything you were after.

I agree that it kinda looks intentional. Also, if the stock is getting replaced rather than repaired, I would be interested in buying the broken stock.

Hello,
I might be able to help you out depending on how many you need. I could probably spare 50-75 .285g A-Frames. They are factory pulls that look like new. Let me know if you are still looking,
Thanks,
Gary
