I‘m planing my third Africa Safari in 2027. As one of the results of my first two Safaris in Zimbabwe and Massailand/Rungwa I know that my main passion is following the tracks of old Buffs . No cat‘s , to Track for an old Trophy Elephant- very fascinating but to shoot him
So I think I want to go for a Double Buff Safari- ca.10-12 hunting days. The areas which are my favorites are Tanzania ( Selous/ Kilombero/ Rungwa), Mozambique ( I think Niassa must be good, but I‘m affraid for safety reasons up there- so maybe looking for other good areas) . Zimbabwe ( Zambesi Valley) , or Caprivi Strip.
Looking for „Special“ Buffs I think it needs also special PH‘s who have experience and passion for finding old ones and most important the teamwork with their Trackers.
Beauty of landscape is also a important aspect where to go.
Thank you for recomandations, offers

For something like that, I would also rather go to Uganda, and especially to the North Karamoja region, not the Zambezi Valley.

I’m not sure what your price range is, but lot of good areas. I’d look at bwabwata park concessions in Caprivi. Kou Kuas (sponsor) holds the west currently. Adjacent Kruger in APNR produces some really exceptional old bulls, but it’s more of a dedicated buffalo hunt with very little PG available. Zimbabwe produces some really nice bulls and exceptional PHs, but I think there is some luck getting those really old bulls. Thick brush and a lot of lions make it difficult if you are looking for that 12+ class. I just finished hunting with KOS safaris in southern karamoja in Uganda. It’s a 700k acre reserve with estimated 1000 buffalo and more PG than I’ve seen anywhere else. The quota probably doesn’t allow a double buffalo but the age class they produce is really exceptional and some unique PG makes up for it. It’s also a tracking hunt with zim PHs rather than spot and stalk hunting in the north. There are a lot of good options now thankfully. I don’t know enough about Botswana or Zambia to recommend areas there, but the areas in northern Luangwa really seem to produce some nice bulls.

If you want another area of Moz - consider Coutada 9. Very safe. Mokore safaris.

Uganda seems to have what I'm looking for a Scrum cap. Have had great success with very old buffalo in the Lowveld Conservancy in Zimbabwe and am going with Dave Langerman again to Niassa this July. Hunting L7 where Derek Littleton guided a hunter to the 2025 Rigby Dugga Boy award winner.

Thank you Gentlmen for your interesting informations. Looks like I have now Even one more option- Uganda.
Anyway it looks to me I can‘t do much wrong hunting with CMS in Dande. Any recomandation which Camp (area) there for Double Buff - looking for old ones, hunting in June ( many leaves still up)

You’ll hunt all of dande regardless which camp you stay at unless you are in the east. I like Mururu the best. It’s the smallest and in center of area.

Another vote for Uganda for scrum caps, not that I've ever been, but Tim Herald has killed some ancient bulls there in the past few years.

I second the mururu camp

But don't worry, all of Dande is available to you, and then can enjoy some tiger fishing on the Zambezi out of matomba camp.

As you stated. You want a proper tracking hunt. And you will get exactly that with CMS in the Zambezi valley. I can think of nothing finer, that experience is just as important as the end result.

Please do consider Zimbabwe and Mozambique. I offer great buffalo hunting in southern Zimbabwe in a fantastic area for dagga boys and my area in Niassa is 1.6 million acres of true wilderness hunting. As ZimFan pointed out, the recent Rigby award winning buffalo was hunted in the concession where I hunt. The area is remote and wild. Feel free to DM me for further info

Good Day Sir

Great post, and it’s clear you already understand what makes a buffalo hunt truly special: old bulls, good trackers, and time on the ground following tracks.

If I may add another option to your list, have a look at what Tsala Safaris is doing in southern Mozambique. We own the area , no concession , no 3rd party. We are the boots on the ground with our community.

Our area lies along an unfenced boundary with Gonarezhou National Park and the Save river in the north , forming part of a vast, wild ecosystem where buffalo move freely between Mozambique and Zimbabwe. It’s proper “old Africa” , just big country and tracking on foot.

What makes it particularly well suited to what you’re looking for:

  • Excellent buffalo genetics and numbers , we consistently see hard-bossed, mature dagga boys.
  • True tracking hunts, covering ground behind experienced local trackers who grew up in the area
  • A very authentic feel , open savannah, mopane, thick jess, and big baobabs.
  • An area that’s maybe not as “famous” as Selous or Zambezi Valley, but quietly competes with the best in Southern Africa when it comes to buffalo quality and area.
For a 10–12 day double buffalo safari, it’s exactly the kind of place where patience and teamwork with your PH and trackers pays off. It’s not about rushing , it's about finding those old, worn bulls that have seen a few seasons.

On the safety side, southern Mozambique (where we operate) is stable and well established for hunting, and quite different from some of the concerns further north.

If the idea of tracking buffalo in a big, unfenced system appeals to you, feel free to reach out , happy to share more details or just chat through options.

Wishing you the best with the planning , your third safari sounds like it’s going to be a special one.

Best Regards

Rouan.

There's an old boy our outfitter had located a while back. As well as a few young ones that stumbled in on us while bow hunting.

The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. I have not posted any items for sale on this forum and will not every put anything for sale. My account was hacked and I've worked with the admin to get things shut down.
