While out in Eastern Oregon for elk season this year I didn't see a single bull elk in the woods, I did however see a good sized black bear at 75 yards. The wind was in my favor and after a few moments he presented a nice, quartering-to angle and I put a 260 gr, Nosler Partition from my single shot .375 H&H just in front of his right humerus and the bullet exited the left tricep. Double lung obliteration with no appreciable meat damage outside of the tricep. He did a flip and sprinted down toward a ravine and I found him about 70 yards from where he was shot.

He is a good sized boar, probably between 250-275 lbs live weight but I didn't have a chance to weigh yet. I am going to European mount the skull and rug the hide.

I have always had my eyes open for bear but this is the first I had seen in the woods while hunting. Man what an exciting shot! Time stood still and everything came together nicely.

He is 5' 8" nose tip to tail tip, just under 7' front to back between outstretched claws. Skull hasn't dried but a rough measurement was just over 17" total.

He is going to be good eating!

Congratulations! Tell us about that color cased beauty you used…
Thank you!

The rifle is a 1981, Ruger No. 1 that I sent to RJ Renner in Nevada, he reshaped the stock for use with irons, slimmed the stock and for-end down and added the ebony cap and had the metal parts case colored for me. He also smoothed up the action and trigger is light and crisp now. He put on a white bead front sight and his ghost ring rear. I was going to run it with the irons but put a scope on it to work up a load for 235gr TSX, but ran out of time before season because of work. So I ran out and zeroed the rifle for the factory Partitions I had on hand and the 1-4 scope I bought on AH worked like a charm.

I have posted some better photos of the rifle on the forum previously if you look them up. It has exceptional factory wood.

Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Congrats nice bear!

Bears always make for a fun hunt. Congratulations!

I am already getting a plan together to go back out specifically for bear, what a rush! In Oregon you can take up to 3 bear per year.
Thanks!

Very nice bear. One of our favorite things to hunt. That No. 1 is awesome!

Thanks! I can't take much credit other than shooting well. He and I just happened to be walking through the same patch of woods at the same time. I will probably leave the rifle to my kids some day but I like it so much I am tempted to have it buried with me.

Congrats on your lifelong dream black bear!

My problem with some of my lifelong dream hunts is that they are above my pay grade or higher on the mountain than I can now climb.

Thank you for sharing your hunt!
You have a wonderful rifle, and a wonderful Bear now.
Please post some pics of the skull and the rug as soon they will be ready!
