Went out for my first dove hunt this morning. It's a hoot!

There is a LOT of shooting!!

The set up was a very simple affair of a few decoys on a farmers field.

The guides dog had gained some weight in the off-season, but she was eager and fun to watch retrieving the birds

Thankfully, after waaay too many spent shells littered the field, I shot my limit.

I am definitely down to doing this again! It is good training that's for sure, humbling, but fun. (I taped the receiver so it wouldn't flash in the morning sun. Sad sacrifice and I am not sure it was even necessary!)

Absolutely not necessary. White wings are usually here by now, but have yet to see one on the place.

I was just south of San Antonio on Wednesday, lots of white wings. Today Sunday, in Pearsell, still waiting to see some birds. Received a report on Friday, from Hondo, no birds - no bueno.

It's coming off then! After a few passes I figured I had wasted my time. These neat little birds don't seem to care about me sitting there until I moved to shoulder the gun.

I have now cleaned them all. They are basically flying mcnuggets.

I am making a risotto so the whole bird is used to make a stock and then the meat shredding off.

Interesting. Would love to hear how it works out. We normally breast them and head to the grill after wrapping in jalapeno and bacon. Need an original new idea.

And yes, they are all about motion - well don't wear safety cone orange - but being still as they approach is the key.

@Red Leg check out this book for inspiration. There are several neat dove recipes. Some other good stuff too!

It wasn't a bad day, but my wife preferred to try this as an introduction to doves.

@Pheroze is dove hunting allowed in Ontario now? Our farm was covered up with them when I was growing up but we weren’t allowed to hunt them.

I believe the first hunt was in 2013. It hasn't caught on yet in a big way but is open from Sept 1 in the Central and Southern districts in Ontario.

Wow, that hurts, all those years covered up with doves and couldn’t hunt them and now it’s legal!

+1 Your method of cooking is identical to my son's and mine.

Was in Uvalde Friday and birds were not that plentiful. Seen a good amount but not many shoot-able.

Went to Pearsell Saturday evening and OMG. I have never seen so many birds in one location! Well over 5k in an hour, all white wing. Crazy good, farm said last weekend he was not seeing any. 18 people in our group all limited out in less than 2 hours. I have never been to Argentina or Bolivia I can only imagine what that is like. It is on the bucket list for sure.

But I am not seeing anything to write about at home in Aransas Pass.

Update on Pearsall, saw a few hundred birds late in afternoon. Most next field over.

Last year in Pearsall, we had them by the thousands, you just had to put shot up in the air.

Didn’t know Canada had any doves? Good to know. AND I see you used a SEMI AUTO shotgun to slay your limit. Best shotgun action ever for doves! Congrats!

The Browning A5 performed admirably, thanks. It is still new to me and I have only used it a couple of times for trap shooting. It took me a few dozen shots to start to settle in with it lol. But it's weight and balance are great!

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
