The Last Day On The Job

Poton, I just read your latest story. I was shooting in a Pistol Match over the weekend. You certainly ended your career as a professional hunter "with a bang." This was as it should be. Another well told story my friend, but certainly not your last. Your life's story reminds me of one of the principles of a Dale Carnegie class that I took years ago, that being, "when life deals you a bunch of lemons, you make lemonade." I agree with your thoughts that happiness is an internally developed state of mind.

Great story. Its always good to go out with a successful hunt. Thanks for sharing. intertaining as always

Maj Khan, thank you again sir for another beautiful story. Even though it had a sad ending because it was the end of your career, the success of the hunt and the friendship are priceless trophies. Again, thank you for taking us along your wonderful adventures.

@Major Khan ,

As a young professional hunter in Africa this story hit me hard as I read it.... My biggest fear in life is that I will never be able to hunt again, it is all I know and I just absolutely love my job as a professional hunter!

I cannot even think about living without it!

Thank you for the great and really sad story. You did end your career on the highest note possible and that is something you will forever cherish!

All my best and looking forward to reading more of your posts!

Jacques

Major Khan,
Thanks for that story... so well told as always. I read it with a heavy heart as I'm sure you wrote it with a heavy heart. I think many of us have been there... witness to something of value that we are powerless to prevent from slipping away. Something we know will never return. A lost history if you will.

As an aside to the part about Pakistan. I had a friend in school who was from Pakistan. His father by coincidence would have been employed by the federal government in Pakistan as what amounted to a federal forest and game ranger/supervisor for a district in an area in Pakistan that had a relatively healthy population of the large cats. He spoke about his father having to deal with the big cats often. Had your plan for hunting in Pakistan gone as hoped no doubt you all would have crossed paths. Been too long for me to remember the details about exact location though. The time frame for his father's involvement with the cats there would have covered the time of your story- from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. I do not know the fate of my friend's family in Pakistan past about 1971-2. At that time, mid to late 60s though at least the early 70s many students from both India and Pakistan were going to universities here in the US to study engineering. I had several roommates from both India and Pakistan. Quite a mixture I'll tell you! :)
Why thank you so much for your kind words , four five eight . You have a most unique ability to gauge what thoughts go through a man’s mind ... Just by reading a piece of his writing . Your speculation is 100 % correct . I did write this article , with an extremely heavy heart . Nothing feels as gut wrenching , as watching the things which you care about most in this world ... Slowly slip away from you . And you know that you will lose it , any time soon . How ever , you also know that there is nothing which you can do ... To prevent it .

Of course , it is ( Hopefully ) not my last , my friend ! Just let me get rid of all of these slithering reptilian rascals , from my property . I hope to write another new article for African Hunting Forums , after 3 -4 days ... At the latest .

Why thank you so much for your kind words , PARA45 . Indeed , Dan did end up becoming close friends with both Tobin and I . He would eventually introduce me to A & W in America ... Which would end up becoming my favorite fast food outlet for cheese burgers , chili dogs and root beer .

From 1 professional to another ... I sincerely wish you nothing but the best of luck for your career , Jacques . Being a professional hunter brought me a level of joy ... Which can never be recalled by any thing else on God’s Green Earth . It is truly 1 of the most exciting professions of ALL TIME . I have never stopped missing those days , of mine . And listen carefully to me . Never let Africa ( Or indeed , ANY other country ) fall to vegan socialism , like India has . The fate which befell India , can not be allowed to happen any where else in the world . You do that , and it shall make me most happy . I never want any other sports man on God’s Green Earth ...To have to go through , what we went through ... In 1972 .

Right now , the 3 corners of my house are graced by the only 3 keep sakes of mine ... Of my days as a professional shikaree .

Fate has a way of not letting us choose our own endings
