Juneteenth??

There is an AME church at the end of my street. Juneteenth has been celebrated there for over a hundred years. It ain’t a new idea. I’m okay with celebrating the end of slavery. Maybe 86 Columbus Day.

I live and work in Galveston and drive by the Juneteenth landmark every single day. Ever since I can remember, the day and subsequent weekend have been honored and celebrated by a few local communities in the area with parades and festivals.

I find it interesting that suddenly this year the day gains nationwide attention and every politician and major corporation are suddenly fervid supporters of Juneteenth.

For the record, there were no major protests, riots, or demonstrations here. There was plenty of media here the previous days anticipating something of that nature happening. Like I said, never seen that kind of attention regarding Juneteenth before.
So, it sounds like it should be put in the category of 'Texas State Holiday'.

The Democrats sent out a memo, that they were losing black voters to Donald Trump.

That scares them.

It perfectly explains the current state of affairs, and the sudden frenzy for the Juneteenth holiday, and BLM craze.

The Democrat slavemasters don't want anyone abandoning the Democrat plantation.

@ Red Leg said, "The reason there was a delay was that the Emancipation Proclamation only applied to the Confederacy (a small uncomfortable fact)"

You are correct, definitely an uncomfortable fact for those that are pushing what seems to be the current narrative.
Technically, slavery didn't end in the northern and border states until the ratification of the 13th Amendment in Dec. 1865, almost three years after the Emancipation Proclamation. If anyone is actually interested in learning about the War Between the States, reading Bruce Caton and Shelby Foote is recommended.
I can remember the blacks celebrating June 19th over 60 years ago in the small Texas town where I grew up.

I have been digging around over the last few days, and it really does seems to have been largely a Texas thing.

Shelby Foote's history is the most readable nonfiction work about the war ever published (and I am a Douglas Southhall Freeman fan, and Michael Shaara's "The Killer Angels" is the best piece of fiction). It helps, of course, that Foote was a novelist before taking up the writing of his great epic of the war. Knowing how to do character development and achieve pace in a narrative creates a dramatic platform for telling history. And who can ever forget Foote's contributions to Ken Burns's masterpiece.

Think it's to do with end of slavery in usa....but not other continents or countries like Africa.. middle east...etc where continued/continues for long time afterwards ....
The revisionist historians here in the US prefer to exclude the totality of the world history of slavery in order to use it as a political cudgel to force their preferred agendas.

But May 5th comes BEFORE June 19th. :):):);)

March 6th and April 21st come before May 5th as well, however they are not celebrated as much.

I doubt it will work though. All the sociological studies show that black people fear crime more than cops and anywhere from 2/3 to 3/4 support and want more police protection. And the continuation of shutdowns in Democrat run states takes away the increases in employment and overall standard of living for black folks under Trump economic policies.

I can remember Juneteenth being celebrated in Texas from when I was a child. It is a “State Holiday” along with Confederate Memorial Day. I have to wonder how long it will take the the social justice warriors to complain about CMD and that will be gone too.

What justification is there for a Confederate Memorial Day? Does it make sense to celebrate a failed insurrection?

Celebrate the dead from the War between the States.

While I disagree with the cause the Confederacy was fighting for I don’t see why we need to celebrate their deaths. That seems like rubbing salt in the wound don’t it? Poor sportsmanship.

Civil Wars suck.

There are many very strong feeling that takes time, years, decades and centuries to work through. This is not only true for countries but for the individual families.

Robert Stell Heflin was my grandmother's grandfather. As a state senator for Alabama he voted against session for the state of Alabama. Yet he was a slave holder.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Stell_Heflin

It is said in family history/lore that when his sons joined the Confederate Army he stated, "I hope a Yankee bullet finds each one." I cannot imagine saying that about my own sons. After the war, family history/lore says that those sons moved to Cleburne, Texas and Granbury, Texas. I am pretty sure that Christmas Holidays were not pleasant in that family. I have never met any of my relatives that are descended from Robert Still Heflin that moved to Texas even though I was born and raised in Texas.

Robert Stell Heflin remarried and my grandmother's father, John Wyatt Heflin, was born from that second marriage. It is the Heflins of Randolph County Alabama that I know.

Did and does the Confederate Memorial Day in Texas help in consoling families that lost loved ones in the American Civil War. I am sure it serves that purpose. Did and does the Confederate Memorial Day in Texas cause pain and angst amongst those people who are most directly affected by Juneteenth. Yes, I am sure it does.

Civil Wars Suck.

"Poor sportsmanship". Guess you have your answer about how long it will take. Probably should exclude Vietnam war dead from Memorial Day, too, since many disagree with the cause and it was a "failed" intervention.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
