Why no love for the .358 Win?

I was just reading through this whole thread again for the second time. What a neat read. I have a few boxes of old factory loaded silvertips. They shoot pretty decent groups out of my ruger Hawkeye. Maybe I’ll try them on a deer someday. I just really like the 225 SGK and the 225 partition. Hard to want to use anything else.
@Jason1290
The 225gn Woodleigh rnsp knocks the snot out of game. Just ask @Rick HOlbert. He used then in Namibia recently to great affect at a tad over 2,500fps.

If I could still get the silvertips I would shoot nothing but 250’s. My BLR likes the Nosler 225’s also but I prefer the 250 silvertips performance on game as it is simply bang, flop, no tracking needed.
@MS 9x56
Same goes for most 35s, they just seem to work.

"Why no love for the .358 Win?"

Why is there also seemingly no love for the 9x57 Mauser? :D :cool: Well, there is that "thing" about 57 mm cases not fitting well into a short action bolt rifle. VERY similar ballistics to the .358 Win. After all, the .358 Win is basically a 9x51.

I've long thought that a Ruger M77 Mk II International in .358 Win (18 1/2" barrel, full-length Mannlicher style stock) would be a cool little rifle for the woods or the bushveld.

Just my ramblings and musings... Cheers! Bob F. :)

Thanks Bob, that was a good article!
Still can't believe I let a $100 keep me from buying that Mannlicher-Schoenauer in .358 25 years ago.

@7x57Joe
If I didn't build my Whelen it would have been a 358.
There's a nice shirt action Stevens 200 in 243 going cheap at my local gun shop that's just begging for a 358 barrel.
Pity I don't need one.

The .358 Winchester IMO is best suited to short, carbine bolt guns at moderate ranges. I had a .35 Whelen, and while I killed some Deer and Elk with it. It didn't really impress me too much. Recoil was horrendous in a light model 700 Remington, and it didn't do anything that my 30.06 wouldn't do or that my .375 H&H didn't do better. I also have an AR-10 in .308 and I may change the barrel to a .338 Federal.

What does “need” have to do with anything? I didn’t need to convert my 308 to 358 since I already had a 35 Whelen. I also don’t “need” a 9.3x62, but I’m considering getting one.

This is actually a good point I hadn't considered. It is something to consider I guess. a .358 will sling a 250 grain bullet. But not with anything like the velocity of a .35 whelen.
The .358 is a woods cartridge. With the 250 gr spitzer, it's trajectory is flat&powerfull for any application you'll meet in the woods.

I don't agree... calling the. 358 Win a "woods cartridge" is misleading for those considering it. I took a WT buck at 300 yards with my Ruger .358 Carbine. With the right loading, the .358 can be effective well beyond what most people consider "woods" ranges.

A buck is not a challenge for a light .358 bullet.
But 300 yards are, for the 250 gr, I talked about.
Sometimes it is nice to push the limits, somtime it makes sense to know your limits.

I've been doing some load development for my 358 Win. North Fork 200 & 225grn semi spitzers shoot tiny ragged 1 hole groups. And those 225grn Woodleigh RN Weldcore's that great friend Bob Nelson sourced for me were incredible on an old Sable bull back in June of this year. Long live the 358!!

Bad move Joe. My Mannlicher Schoenauer isn’t a 358 but is in the family at 9x56mm. Model 1905.

People talk of woods rifles as if past 100 yards you're done. Heck, most probably know this, but zero that rifle 3" high at 100 yards and 300 to almost 400 yards are very doable. Mostly the limiting factor at 300 yards is the shooter. I won't take a 300 yard shot without a VERY GOOD rest! You also won't miss that opportunity that jumps up at 25 yards. Try it on paper and see, most cartridges are very effective to 300 yards.

@HWL
With a nice 225grainer at over 2,500fps it takes it out of the wood cartridge range and turns it into a medium range round.
The 225gn game king spbt is the ideal bullet. Not enough velocity to blow it up at closer ranges and soft snout to expand at longer ranges. With that projectile I would have no issues out to 259-300 yards

Them that scoff at the 358 win either believe all the gun writer bullshit, have never owned one or wish they had one.
Them that own one and understand it will never part with their little power house.
You will have another 100 of those Woodleighs in a couple of weeks. Just try and find something big enough to shoot so you can actually retrieve a bullet.

Jake, Sorry to bug you again. I was wondering if you could share a. couple actual pics of this crossbow with me?

Xpedition Archery USED Scrapeline390X Sniper Gray Crossbow XACW1001 - Light Wear - Needs Bolt/Arrow Guide Spring UA5689

If it is in a decent shape, would you be willing to sell it for $100 shipped? IS it missing the retention spring that goes over the bolt?
Thank you Ferenc

Good morning John, I just read your setup procedure for the northstar duplicator ator. I found it very hand and I did learn some things. I have the same machine and I am having a problem i can not figure out and was hoping you could shed some light on the subject.
