So, I Was In The Loading Room Today...

So there I was in my little section of the garage aka my reloading room......weeping just a bit over my current stash of North Fork bonded cores knowing my next order will likely be my last.

:(
Why your last Phil?

bullthrower,
you are a man of good taste and great intuition.
given a chance, the 9.3 x 64 will give you good service and a lot of interesting fun.
you will find that most 9.3 bullets are meant for the lower velocities of the x62 and x74, and as such are more suited to smaller game.
this includes the nosler partition.
with h4350 you can get 2600 at less than max with 286 gn swift, and 2500 similarly with lighter than max pressures with the swift 300 gn.
these are powerful loads that are as effective on medium sized game as bigger species.
check out the point blank distance for +/- 3" with the 286 gn load.
it is useable to 300 yds where you will have to aim 9 - 10" high, and still fast enough to get bullet expansion at that range.
the 250 gn barnes and the 250 gn nosler accubond will do different jobs while overlapping and shooting quite flat.
I have tried re15, as it looks good on paper, but it has a very sudden appearance of high pressure, and could not give the velocities of h4350.
destroying cases with over pressure can be expensive in this chambering.
h4350 will need some compression, but if you work up it is a non issue.
re15 might be more suited to 235 and 250 gn bullets than heavier.
max loads with the 270 gn speer exhibited almost explosive results, suggesting use on whitetails and average pigs.
the 286 gn barnes would be nice, to try, but is just too long to get enough h4350 in the case.
I have often wondered how re17 and re16 would go in this case.
375 h@h ballistics in a 30/06 length action - what more could you ask for.
good luck,
bruce.
So a 286 gr 9.3 bullet is for "smaller game"?o_Oo_O Like white tail deer or impala? LOL.

sestoppelman,
yes the 286 nosler partition does not handle the speed of the 9.3x64.
not once, but multiple times it has not performed well on donkeys due to nose blowup.
the big giveaway was a not so good shot killing like the hammer of thor.
next to the inlet wound was a wound about the size of the palm of a hand where the nose blew back out.
noslers have been reported doing this in 8mm rem mag too, again faster than the bullet was designed for.
the violence of this caused the rest of the bullet to change direction and go where it should have.
swift have proven to be better killers, and surprisingly will handle smaller game as well as bigger - very versatile.
actually the brenneke tug bullet, a dual core, so good in the 9.3 x 62, has trouble in the x 64 due to the extra speed as well, but will at least penetrate straight.
bruce.

Must have been a bad lot bullets or some other factor. The Partition is designed to lose the front half and it often does. The back half keeps driving as its designed to do. I have no idea what happened there. I don't think the 64 drives it that much faster than the 62 to make such a horrendous difference. Only talking about maybe at most 200 fps more than the 62 or even less if some are to be believed about the speeds they get with their 662's. I don't believe that's enough to make a Partition fail. My brother drove a 200 gr Partition quartering thru a kudu bull, going thru some 4 or 5 feet of critter and exiting fired from a .300 Hollands at over 2800 fps.

you are probably right with the figure of 200 fps., but it could be up to 300?
I just know that the swifts have proven SO superior in killing power that I am prepared to pay $3.00 per bullet as compared to $1.00, and consider it cheaper.
this is not only based on the cost of a trip, but also on the amount of ammo required on the trip.
the swifts simply give really impressive kills on a wide variety of game with anything like a good shot from any angle.
bruce.

Much depends on intended usage of course. Is the Partition the BEST bullet available? I doubt many would say it was. I look at it this way. The '64 is about the same power as the .375 Hollands. Slightly smaller caliber and slightly less bullet weight as standard. The .375 will push without much trouble, a 300 gr slug to 2650 while the '64 will probably run a 286 to maybe 2700 with a good load. Nosler manual says more than that, but the Nosler manual often has some pretty high posted speeds for their loads and used a 25.5 inch barrel for testing, but basically they are two peas in a pod. Point is, you don't often hear of a 300 gr Partition in the .375 failing as you describe, so I see no reason why a similar caliber and weight 9.3 slug would be any different. Not like they make different quality Partitions by caliber. That's why I wonder if perhaps there was a bad lot going by your description.

And I have used the 300 gr .375 on game in Africa. When I put them where they belong, performance was as expected, dead critters, often dramatic. Complete penetration was the rule. I have also used the 9.3x62 there twice and relied on the 250 Accubond once, and the Barnes Triple Shock once, same weight. I could not really tell any difference.

I ran 286gr NP @ 2550fps thru my 9.3x63 with great performance . The jacket on the nose is designed differently based on caliber and velocity. I shot one Buffalo with my 375 300gr NP on the point of the shoulder when he was slightly quartering to me. The bullet failed to penetrate and ran down the ribs to the paunch. I have read reports of the same thing happening with the A frame and Barnes. Rare but does happen. Lesson learned don't take that type of shot. May only happen 1 in a thousand but trust me it is not a good feeling.

Refilling .375's as soon as I had emptied them. I marvel at the size of these cases and the sounds they make. The 300 grain Sierra's are curvy fat boat tails that look alluring and hypnotize me. The powder charges take forever to measure.
I'm new to what I call big boy reloading. I'm reusing the same 10 cases for practice. The barrel gets too hot and the shooter gets weary after five rounds in the heat. PPU brass so I should be expecting it to give up at some point soon. 3-4 loadings or so? I'm hand priming now looking for loose pockets.

I like the belted magnums for various reasons, but you need to check out http://www.larrywillis.com . The headspace gauge and collet resizing die are great additions. Good advice on that webpage too.(y)

So, I was in the loading room tonight and finished up my 470 Loads for Zim. I am going to miss reloading this wonderful cartridge so religiously. It has become a weekly ritual for many months now. Hopefully all of our practice will pay off with grand old dagga boy hunted the way I have dreamed of since a kid.

Bullthrower338, what is your recipe? Please include velocity and accuracy data if you have it. BTW what loading trays do you use?

Hi Art,
Fed 215M primer
118.0 grains of IMR 7977
500 gr Swift A-Frame
Norma Brass
Avg 2180 FPS
I haven’t measured the groups with more than my less than calibrated eye but both barrels print composite groups of an inch or less with about 2” or so between left and right.

The loading block is Frankfort Arsenal for the 470 NE

Those are some pretty looking rounds. Now, just shoot straight and have a helluva hunt!

Trust me, we haven't even left Houston yet and this trip has already been an adventure!

Right Cody? :unsure::unsure:o_O

It will be a minor miracle (if there is such a thing) if neither of us sees the inside of a jail or hospital on this trip.

But we're going to have fun!
