Hi Guys,

New to the group. Been a long time meat hunter. My family and I love the African bush. And annually hunt for the table at home. My daughters love venison and prefer the taste to beef.

Hunted pretty much most African antelope.

Hello and welcome!

Welcome aboard Hunter Mickey. Where do you live? Do you usually hunt your own or a friends' property? What kind and caliber rifles do you own? BTW I thought that Zebra meat was very good tasting as well. The PHs we hunted with seemed to prefer it over "venison."

Hi. I live in JHB. I own a few but my favorite is a Sako 85 30-06 with GRS stock and Z6i Swarovski scope.

I hunt everything from Impala to Eland with it.

I normally hunt at Hakuna Matata. It's really great and the whole family - sister, nieces and nephews, cousins etc comes along and we make a family event out of it. They stay at the camp while out go out each day.

This year I took my nephew on his first hunt he took a male and female impala with the 243. We covered 13km on foot on the first day. He was exhausted after, but I’m sure he will remember it his whole life.

I also took a colleague’s husband from the UK and her son ( also first time hunt). They took a Kudu cow, a blesbuck and an Impala. They are already talking about next year. :)

I hunted an Eland and Kudu cow and a Golden Wildebeest. The wildebeest was not on my list for meat but I was offered it at a steal ( basically the same price as a blue) and having never hunted on took the opportunity.

We now have enough meat for the whole family both siblings and cousins family.

Hunter Mickey, '06s have been putting meat on the table for quite a while now. On my first trip to Africa I took a 35 Whelen and a 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser. The Whelen is very close to the 9.3 x 62. I used it on an Eland cow. However on my second Safari I took a 404 Jeffery which I used on a large Eland bull. Maybe that much "horse-power" wasn't necessary but the Eland dropped in his tracks. Please post some more about your combined family outings and hunting trips.

My most memorable hunt was a Kudu male. We tracked him for 18km form early morning to late afternoon. I struggled all day to get a shot in the thick bush but eventually took him.

My most difficult was a wildebeest that I shot low through the brisket. I followed blood for 6 hours often only picking up a small drop every now and then through thick bush and by following his tracks when the blood disappeared for a while. I eventually found him too. Patience and a good eye is an important skill when hunting and if you look close you can always follow the trail.

True enough, but sometimes it would be nice to own or have access to a good hound that has been trained to follow blood. I am amazed at some of the posts I've read and stories I've heard about the tracking skills some folks have. Even when a wounded animal has stopped bleeding and mingled with the herd.
