how refreshing it was to find this forum.
i accidentally discovered it when seeking terminal ballistics information.
one thing that really concerns me is the way modern hunters are drifting away from their game animals in understanding and empathy.
in big part this seems to come from the new long range so called hunting developments with the ultimate being the evolution of the "tactard"
of course the marketing machine has gone from capitalizing on this to pushing it on at an ever increasing rate.
the modern hunter seems to have no desire to stalk game, and the things that go with that, like understanding the habits of wild animals, and a work ethic.
there seems to be no desire to understand any ballistics other than flight of the bullet, in order to use a wind meter and a range finder, then dial the scope.
few now even seem to understand the concept of zeroing a rifle to take advantage of point blank range.
guys think that any bullet at any range can kill anything, not taking into account what kind of power is required at striking distance, and bullet expansion/penetration characteristics are required at those velocities.
and will that bullet, so good at really long range be any use at all at close range.
as long as it is a vld it is ok for them.
these modern rifles meant for prone shooting are no good at all for most hunting positions, standing, kneeling, or sitting. guys can't shoot offhand anymore.
as for pointing, just forget it.
i see many guys just using match bullets for hunting and thinking that is ok.
here on this forum we see real hunting discussed.
thank the lord.
rifles i have for different applications are a 280 rem, a 7mm stw, and a 9.3x 64.
have owned and used 17, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, 33, 35, 36,37, and 45 cal centrefires on game, all reloaded, including getting an original 450 rigby double to regulate with handloads.
also 40 and 45 cal black powder cartridge rifles shooting targets out to 1000 yards with paper patch bullets.
i would like to hunt one day with one of these rifles, but time does not permit.
bruce.

Welcome to AH!

If you watch a lot of TV programs it seems like the art of shooting at long range is the only thing that matters. I think a lot of people would be better off stalking closer to the game and practicing one shot kills.

Welcome to our place Bruce

Hi Bruce, welcome to AH !

A lot of us here agree with your feelings about what hunting is about.

Welcome Bruce, thank you for your contribution. You make a few valid points. Fortunately, in Namibia most of the outfitters also privately own their hunting land and manage their own hunting business which results in not only living close to nature but also to respect what nature presents in terms of trophies etc. We have always (22 years) focused more on the hunting experience than the killing of a trophy.

Welcome BRUCE to AH! You said -

I believe you should reconsider. We are all in control of our on destiny. You make a plan to change what you want to do. Only you can decide, but “time waits for no man”. We only have a limited amount of time and the important thing is how we decide to use it.
Please reconsider for your personal well being.
Best!

Bruce, you should find that time and take one of those rifles because I can guarantee you will not regret it.
If you're a hunter and enjoy hunting, get yourself to Africa and experience it.
Like many here I never thought I would be able to but I'm heading back there for the fourth time this year.
You can find the time and you can find the money and a hunt that will meet your needs.

Welcome, You will find that a lot of people on here will agree with your sentiments. Make a plan and you may find yourself in Africa using one of your cherished firearms and hunting the way you would like, spot and stalk, up close and personal. You would be amazed how much your PH knows about the game you will be hunting and how much you will as a hunter need to learn to be successful.

Welcome aboard Bruce. There are lots of guys here that think the way you do. if you are thinki9ng about hunting Africa "draw up" your set of musts and or hunting preferences and ask for a quotation. One or more of the outfitters will get in touch with you.

guys,
thanks for the replies.
great to hear that others share my sentiment.
keep safe,
bruce.

Bruce,
I like to hunt. I find a thrill in getting as close as I can before shooting. Perhaps I am a bow hunter that never converted to stick and string as I still like a trigger and the roar of a rifle. I hunted with traditional black powder rifles for a number of years and really enjoyed it.

Welcome to the forum and we look forward to hearing more from you.

Randy

Bruce I like to hunt a lot and then shoot some times but many times its the hunt that does it for me.
Now many of your words are truly relevant to a majority of the up and comers in the hunting world of today.....sage words indeed!

guys,
one has to admire bowhunters for commitment and effort.
this ethic can come into rifle hunting as well.
one of the best things a hunter can do is let the animal go - you do not have to kill it.
a sambur hunter friend once told me that "nothing ruins a good hunt more than getting one."
i know dedicated sambur hunters can and do go the whole mile, some not even eating meat for a period of time prior to a hunt to reduce their signiature.
only when you do these things do you get the full appreciation of the reward.
i have noticed of recent years a trend where guys read stuff, and believe they can go straight to the top.
they do nothing to develop muscle memory, understand zeroing rifles for optimized point blank range, learn how to judge range, or a knowledge of the target species.
they develop bad habits by practising them.
they do not even know these things exist for god sake.
they cannot camp without a frig, a portable shower, a toilet tent, or many other comforts of home.
going to older more experience guys for advice is to be despized.
bruce.

I think a lot of the youtube videos, hunting infomercials, the hunting rags which have morphed in to veiled ads for the latest and greatest, are just peripheral noise surrounding the hunting community. Long range is probably less than 1% of actual hunting and 99% of those that wander afield are true sportspersons. My 2¢? STOP WATCHING THAT SHIT, throw those hunting rags
in the recycle bin and spend your time reading forums such as this.
