Hello all,

I am a new member, I haven’t been to Africa yet, and won’t be for several more years as I’m still in school and can barely justify buying coffee when water from a fountain exists. I will say I’ve already been infected with African hunting sickness, and have been since I was 7 and first read a story about lion hunting. I’ve been a member for a couple of months now, and am feeding my addiction with y’alls wonderful hunting reports. I’ve gone through 200/1395 posts in that section in about a month and a half, so I will ask all members to go hunting and write more reports!! Its for the good of us poor unfortunate souls that need to live vicariously. Until I can join y’all over there I am hunting deer in my home state of Kansas (best place for it, undisputed ), hogs in Oklahoma where I am in school, and coyotes in both states (thats one species I wouldn't mind extinction of, they kill too many deer for my liking).

I’ve also been trying to soak up as much information on Africa as possible, this site seems to be a fount of knowledge. I stumble on it while planning a perfect dream safari (ended up being about $500,000; included elephant, buffalo, and lion in nearly every country that allows it, a battery of 6 guns, nearly endless plains game, and about 3 months of straight hunting, unrealistic but remember it was a fantasy dream safari). I hope someday I can contribute more than a few silly beginner questions, and look forward to being part of the AH community.

Sincerely,

Lawrence Barrett (lbarr265)

Welcome! Get the school done and paid for and save up. Talk to some folks about cull hunts or look through the "Deals & Offers" section - I bet you can put together a relatively inexpensive first trip for less than you might think.

Already working on that, 7 years out of 8 done for my PhD in engineering, I have been trying to save up, but somehow my savings keep dropping and the gun safe keeps having less free room. Not sure whats happening...

You’ve got a lifetime ahead of you! Make yourself a yearly budget every year and stick to it! Any extra funds, start investing it. To repeat what Warren Buffet has said, put it into an S&P 500 fund and don’t watch it as the market fluctuates. You don’t care if it’s high or low, just keep plugging away.
Best of luck and keep your dream!

Hello and welcome aboard!

Welcome to AH Lawrence!

A PhD in engineering? You poor sap! :D Although I can't talk, I'm a petroleum engineer myself. What school are you going to?

And if you are looking for help with your affliction, you have come to the wrong place. I've already bought 1 rifle from another member, and bought another because I saw someone post that particular rifle on here and "had to have" one myself.

I’m going to the University of Oklahoma, particularly the chemical engineering program, so I’m fairly close to you in petroleum.

I’m not looking for help. I’m still young and dumb, I’m looking for enablers ;) averaging one new gun a year, It will probably slow down when my last three spots are filled. Already planned out a 338 win mag in a model 70, picked with help from members here, for the next one.

Welcome aboard. What field of engineering? There are lots of us here, and we were all broke when we got out of school. There is an old saying "that if you watch your pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves." There is more truth than fiction to that statement.

Chemical engineering. Thanks for the warm welcome :)

Good school, used to go to OU games when I lived in Oklahoma.

I’m looking for enablers ;)
@Bullthrower338....Cody, you're presence is needed. I think his rate of 1 gun per year shows a lack of ambition. Thoughts?

I have a good friend with similar credentials that works for Poly One (sp) he likes it. After a year or two at a firm like that and you will be able to go to Africa.

Ahh, @Lbarr265 indeed a lack of ambition! Good school and good career path yet you are overlooking the main thing in life! A good woman, a house or maybe graduating? Not at all, these are all creature comforts that can be done over time! A good deal on a firearm, pass her by and it will haunt you until the day you die.
The force is strong with you, I can tell by the fact you have the impeccable taste to seek a 338! A 338 WM is a great start down the path of righteousness and into something.375 or larger. I would fear not to walk into any valley with a 338 but I will fear less with a 505 Gibbs! As they say in the internet world, trending! Resist the temptations of the flesh(at least meaningful ones) until your safes are full, yes safes young Jeti engineer, plural is the key in this field. You will be told buy a battery of guns, these people are referring to a nice collection of 3-5 rifles and a 12 bore. Heed their advice, but buy a battery for all occasions which may mean 30-50 sets of rifles. A good friend told me last night as I was looking for someone to tell me to buy a Griffin and Howe, it's your 401K, just don't let it jeopardize the BVC hunt.
Moral of the story: Always contribute to your 401K!

Note: I'm not a Star Wars nerd, just drinking excessively this evening! Lol

It’s not a lack of ambition, merely a lack of ability. I’ve already forgone coffee, store bought meat (totally happy with deer and wild pork), and heat in the winter (it’s Oklahoma so it’s not terrible) to get as high as one a year. Not much else I can give up to go higher, but it will happen once I’m graduated and being paid full time, don’t worry about that ;). Hopefully I will be able to learn from your tutelage when that day comes master

As far as the 505 Gibbs, I won’t rule it out if I find a good deal but I think I’d rather one of the nitro express carriages in a nice heym double. Not that I’ve spent any time drooling over their catalog or anything...

I’m guessing your a fan of the 338, so I have a question what would be a good scope for such a gun? Looking for a little first hand knowledge.

Heym double, I love where you are heading! I've shot several and a superb rifle indeed. I have a feeling I may own one myself soon. Love the newest model they are offering, but waiting on a report from @matt85 on his 500NE when it arrives.
As far as a scope on the 338 WM goes, I have always been a fan of a 4-12 for open area and a 1-6 in the dark timber lodgepole. My Ultras are typically set up with the 4-12 or a smudge higher mag though very rarely besides bench work would anything greater than 9X ever hinder you. A straight 6X on a WM would probably serve you perfectly well but I like a little extra when I'm at the bench these days. Yes, I am a fan of the 338 as well as many others, but the 338 holds a spot dear to my heart on NA game. It flat works and doesnt tear up meat like a lot of the other magnums do. Bullet choices are plenty, two of my favorite are the 250 A-Frame and a 225 Accubond. They seem to fit any black tie event or down and dirty cross canyon intervention.
Congrats on earning a diploma from a fine institution, you will do good in the sector.

A PhD in ChemE?????

OK, a little reality check:

We all know what BS really stands for, right.
So a MS is "more of the same"
and PhD is "piled higher and deeper"

:E Happy:

Seriously, stick with it. My BS and MS in Petroleum Engineering has been my ticket to the world and help to pay for a number of safaris.

Welcome to the site! when you are traveling from your school to your home, you will pass 14 miles from my home. I too share your passion for eradicating coyotes, had 2 ruin my whitetail hunt this weekend. If you want to stop by my trophy room for a chat, just p.m. me and we'll talk. Maybe I can "enable" you a bit more. Don't get into trouble in Norman, my daughter is an assistant District Attorney down there and has "met" a few college chaps. She is mean and successful at her job.

Welcome to AH sir! If you can dream it you can do it! Best wishes in your studies.

I won’t be heading north until Christmas time, but I’ll have to take you up on that offer sometime. And no worries about your daughter, I don’t have the time or money to get into too much trouble haha.
