Ok just walked out of the second archery shop here in Virginia that has told me that my arrows are too heavy for Africa. I've researched and gathered information and opinions and am now currently shooting a Mathews Creed at 70 pounds,27.5" draw, 200gr broadheads for a total weight of 582grains. I don't believe that my guys at the bow shop have ever been to Africa but they suggested a heavy arrow with a lighter expandable broadhead(which I'm not a fan of). I know I've asked about this before but please let me know if my setup is good for Wildebeest, Zebra, Gemsbok, and warthog.

I know the plywood isn't brand new but so far I'm optimistic about these VPA 2 blade 200gr broadheads. Going to try them out on some wild pigs in a couple weeks.

Thanks my fellow hunters,

DL

If they poke holes in wafer board ......should be fine on plains game! All you have to do is hit the critters in the right place! I don't fling sticks but looks like you know what you are doing!

Thanks CAustin. He also tried to tell me that arrows lose KE as they travel rather than the opposite

Kenetic energy is maintained unless a body looses speed. So the guy is saying over greater distances the arrow will loose speed just like a bullet does. In that event KE is reduced. It's been 40 years ago that I took physics but I think I have it right.
Anyway good hunting!

Your set up is more than adequate for those species, my wife and I have taken those cleanly with a lot less!

582 grains too heavy? Um, nope! There is no such thing as too dead, but there is such a thing as not dead enough. Likewise with arrow penetration - there is no such thing as too much penetration, but there is sure as hell such a thing as not enough penetration. Expandable broadhead? Not a single PH I have ever talked to or corresponded with recommend an expandable broadhead. Personally I would say that you are good to go! :)

Nothing like being blind and giving advice on how to see!

Quit asking twits for opinions, they will most surely provide them.
Practice, get your accuracy up and take your set up and go hunting.

........... a lighter expandable broadhead. ............

MORONS. I just can't be polite on that one.

great set up go with it! I haven't shot African critters with bow but plenty moose and other big critters and I use 70lbs bow heavy arrows and 125gr thunder heads fixed 3 blades works like a charm. light expandables for big critters is for MORONS!!!!:)

Amen on those notes as well. I actually don't ask them anything on my setup. They just noticed my heavy arrow setup and started questioning me lol

Yeah I'm punching through plywood at 40 yards for now lol

I think for now on I'm just going there to get arrows cut until I am able to cut my own. Every time they question me they're getting "shush" hand .
Thanks for the support fellas

Danny,

Back when I worked part time in a gun shop here, I used to marvel at the advice some of my co-workers would proudly give to customers that, were asking what type of firearm and ammunition they should buy for things like; self defense against "violent criminals" or, in case of a "grizzly bear attack" or for hunting caribou (or name most any firearm related question).
Not all employees there were inexperienced but nonetheless, specifically regarding a couple of these sales-pitching "fountains of gun knowledge", I am quite sure they had never even seen a violent criminal, or even any type of bear, much less ever shot either one, neither had they hunted caribou, moose, etc., and had likely not hunted anything at all larger than a rabbit for that matter.

One of my favorite in-store scenarios to chuckle behind my whiskers at, was when one of these arm chair gun slingers was pitching away about "bear protection" and firearms for same, just as some other customer in the store turned out to be a local professional Hunting Guide, who politely / gently chimed in with suggestions that contradicted sales clerk "Walter Mitty's" recommendation.
Perhaps those guys I worked with were kin relatives of the ones telling you to use light American deer broad heads on heavy African animals?

As you well know, I'm no archer but light broad heads with small moving parts do not seem like they could possibly withstand as much impact abuse as heavier ones that have no moving parts.
But if I was the only one posting replies on archery tackle here, you'd have to regard my opinion, as if from just another couch potato talking smack from behind a sales counter.

In other words, you are wise here to seek advice from those who have used archery tackle to bag quite a few largish African "plains game" species, since that is what you will be hunting.
It looks to me like those with such experience are endorsing your archery plan and so, all that is left is for you to practice, practice, practice and then practice some more.

Cheers,
Velo Pops.

I'm sure that the help and guidance from the helpful fellow hunters on this forum, the information I've researched, the advice from our PH, and your useful knowledge as well is far more credible and more worthy of following compared to the "dudes" that certainly know how to cut arrows and mount a bow sight but don't seen to have the proper notches in their belts about an archery setup for tougher game in Africa.

I'm sure that they are very knowledgeable on setting up a bow hunter with the proper tackle for whitetail and other North American game. I just don't see any reason to lean in their direction when it comes down to a proper Africa hunting setup due to the fact that they have not hunted there.

I'm also sure that there's some archery shops in North America that are knowledgeable of hunting in Africa. I just wish I could find one in my area.

Thanks in advance for your always appreciated guidance.

In the mean time, I plan to continue to shoot anywhere from nine to twenty one arrows a day in preparation for our adventure in Africa as well as our other planned hunts.

Homey,

Irregardless of how many sheets of processed wood you manage to bag on this hunt or not, with the power vested in me by your step mother, I hereby promote you to this safari's official photo poster.
As well as posting our photos, perhaps if I buy you an extra Windhoek Lager or two, you can teach my elderly azz how to post photos in this forum as well.
No pressure though, long as you don't get demoted, by missing an entire 4x8 sheet of chip board, with you putting up our pictures we will do just fine.

See you soon,
Your wrinkled up old hunting partner.

Will not be a problem. By the way I ran out of lumber. Shooting paper plates for now so I can afford to go to Africa jk

I have a fairly new setup so I've been trying to get accurate with it. Hitting six inch paper plates at 40 yards on a good day
