Whisky appreciation

Not sure how many other whisky lovers there are here but I am one of them.

Do a bit of writing occasionally for a few hunting magazines and nothing is a better accompaniment to writing than a nice dram.

Looking for a reasonable daily sipper that won't break the bank and can be used in a mixer if the need arose. Scottish single malts preferred, current candidates are:

• Glen Moray
• Tamnavullin
• Aberfeldy
• Tomatin
• Smokehead Peat
• Monkey Shoulder (blend, but pretty good)

Any others to consider?

I've liked Speyburn. Only tried the 10yr and wouldn't consider myself any type of connoisseur. I like it a lot more than the glen moray I tried. The 10yr is not expensive. I generally drink it neat.

Stumbled into this Rye this week, I haven't had much of Ole Overalls. Looking forward to cracking this one open after I received a couple recommendations.

One vote for the Sherry cask finished Glen Moray!

Penelope is fantastic it is a mgp juice, but a very good one(don’t get me wrong I have a few bottles in the wings). I just opened a bottle of wild turkey rare breed barrel proof that’s punching above its weight class.

Love the single malt, can’t afford the real expensive ones. Bold Silver Top dry gin neat, is a favorite also.

I bought a bottle of Maker’s 46 Frenched Oak Cask Strength. (A mouthful, I know.) At 110 proof it’s a bit hot for me, but with a couple of cubes and a bit of time to calm down, I really like it. @Jeff505 brought a bottle of the non-cask-strength version to the hunting’ cabin last weekend. I brought the full octane version. (Grey squirrel hunting was the excuse we gave the ladies.) Anyway…once the higher proof version settled down, I couldn’t taste any difference. Good stuff.

It is nice, I actually live in the town where it is made, but buy from the normal retailers. No Special prices, but it sure is a nice and smooth Whiskey.

This is a terrible sight if you love bourbon. Kentucky River flooding the Buffalo Trace distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Gift shop is swamped. I predict EH Taylor will issue a select bottle, immediately going for $5000 on the secondary market.

Traveled to the distillery today, Sunday's it's not open until 11 am. It was very uncomfortable waiting in the parking lot due to heat and humidity, and after asking a worker and finding out the releases would be Eagle Rare and EH Taylor Small Batch, decided to cut loose (no special releases). Seems to be well open for business again. Father's Day had the release of Eagle Rare 12 yo and parking was at a premium, so I was told. No shade available if you plan on arriving early to get a better spot in line. Parking lot attendants were recommending staying in your vehicle with the AC on.

Honestly not virtue signaling but happy to get both of these. Hoping to get Eagle Rare 17 and William LaRue Weller eventually. The Van Winkles will be tough. Would love to find a Pappy 15 year. Waiting for @CZDiesel to come along with another nice countertop spread, lol.

I've had a few from their "core" series, meaning from their entry level tastings. Specifically Barrel Strength, Toasted Bourbon and currently enjoying a bottle of Architect. I enjoy the Architect because it's higher proofed (104) with a heavy French oak flavor. I add a touch of water to open it up, but that's it. Personally I find it a perfect before dinner drink to whet your appetite...but that's me. My bride isn't as fond of it, calling it a little to hot for her tastes. No matter, more for me!

You have the Barrel Strength, Four Grain and Architect...I really enjoyed the Barrel Strength as well, but I'm partial the Architect. I felt that the Barrel Strength was a little young and could have stayed in the barrel for a few more years to smooth out. I can't speak to the Four Grain.
