Ok I read over and over 470 n.e. double is a short range firearm. So has anyone pulled of a longer shot with thier big bore double? Lets not limit it to 470 ne but let us know what calibre you were using.

Here’s @Longrifle on his 2023 hunt in Zimbabwe where he shoots a massive eland bull at 140-150 yards with his Belgium double.

450-400 3" zoli o/u 1-6 accupoint scope:

moose 225 yards, neck shot
blue wildebeest, 195 yards heart/lung shot
moose 320 yards (was previously hit) shot in the rump

on an animal that was standing still, with a good rest, 250 yards is completely do-able with my rifle.

The OP is asking a good question. To me though it is about a couple of things. 1. Can I use my 470 DR over a 100 yards, you bet confidently 2. can this caliber go beyond that, you bet. However for just me I ask myself why do I hunt DG with a DR…the answer is classical nostalgic old Africa where the challenge is getting to at least 50 yards and with elephant closer which is the incredible skill versus a DR for a long range shot. If I wanted to shoot a DG animal at 200-300 yards which I do not and will not I would use my 404J. So to me the real question is why do you hunt with a DR and long distance at least for me is not the answer

Good point Rare Breed. I was just thinking that if I had a chance at some nice planes game while hunting cape buff what is the 470 dr capable of. In another week I will have my first dr and be able to start working up loads. First siuth african safari for buff april 2027.

Take a 375 also and tip the tracker to carry it for you, while you carry your 470.

Just back from a Leopard hunt in Tanzania. Where I used my 470 NE double to take a wildebeest at 110yds and a Zebra at 130 yds for bait. Both shots dropped them in their tracks. I recovered one Northfork SS 500 grain bullet that performed perfectly on wildebeest. I’ll weigh and post photos soon.

Great shooting Buck51. Good to hear the North Fork bullets performed well, thats what I'm planning on loading with.

Pics and weight of the 500 grain North Ford SS recovered from the Wildebeest at 110yds. Found on the off shoulder just under skin. Dropped it in its tracks. 2050 fps at the muzzle. Used RL 15.5 87gns.

Here's a photo of Tony receiving that Shaw & Hunter award at the 1970 annual EAPHA Dinner Dance. Tony Dyer, then EAPHA President and Princess (Sunny) von Auersperg presented it. I also attended the event.

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ
