Favorite broadheads?!?!

Tried many, but I'm taking 125gr Thundered & Slicktricks with me again this summer in the Limpopo. Always good results and always scary Sharp, plus I have dozens of them to use. Slicks fly a bit better than THs for me though.

Well its sure hard to fallow that post, ouch!
I used to work in an archery shop so I made it a priority to try many different heads so I could give customers a first hand revue. I have found in my opinion that it is hard to find a "bad" head. Some just simply work better than others and depending on the setup and intended use. I shot for Rage for a few years and never had any of the problems that I read about on forums. For my upcoming African adventure I have opted to tip my arrows with the DRT broadheads. I liked them so much that I ordered a full dozen.

I have tried many different types and styles of broad heads in my Bear TD recurve. The limbs are 65 # at 28" but I short draw to around say 25"..

I was in So. Africa in 2012 and shot a nice 44" Kudu bull the first day at around 17 yds with Easton 2212 Cosmic Eclips arrows tipped with Magnus 100 grain Classic 2 blade fixed BHs, that weight between 385 to 400 grains and had no trouble with the harvest. (broadside single shot in the center of the vital triangle.) It passed thru both lungs and downed the bull within sight distance.

The most important thing to strive for is an arrow that is tipped with a sharp BH that flies true and hits the vitals. (Shot placement is important in rifle hunting too.)

As bowhunters, we all like to experiment with different gear and find what works best for us. I have been doing that with broadheads for some time now and have selected a few of my favorites for compound and my recurve.

What do you guys like? 2,3, or 4 blade? Fixed or mechanical or slip cam?

For my compound, it is tough to beat the good old fashioned muzzy 125 grain three blade. It is just an amazing head with great blood trails and durability that is unmatched.

For my recurve, i like the silverflame 210 grain two blade and the Muzzy Phantom in 220 grains.

What works for your setup?

Diamond black ice, 55 pounds, I like using fixed broadheads (I don't trust mechanicals-I have seen them fail to open on White-tailed deer.) I have not noticed a difference between muzzy, sabre ss-100 or thunderheads. I use 100 grain. I am going to use 4 blade on black bear because I think that it will cause greater damage and lead to a better blood trail and quicker recovery. Having said that, I would ask your PH to recommend the equipment-he knows what works best on African game. Good luck and don't forget the pics!

Shuttle T-Lock

I use Shuttle t-lock and have had real good luck. It is usually a pass through on every animal that I shoot. Look at the exit wound on last falls Antelope.

Can you post a pic of the broadhead? That hole is HUGE!

I have hunted with a bow for about 40 years as well and have used many dofferent broadhaeds over the years. I have used the thunderheads for years with good sucess, but lately with the faster bows they sometimes can be a challenge to get broaheads tuned. I have used the Slick Tricks with good sucess and I have been very impressed with the Schwackers. My PH in Africa was amazed at the way the Schwackers performed. I dropped every animal with one shot all dropped within 30 yards. The schwackers leave a huge exit wound and have proven to be very durable and fly like field pionts. Bottom line is your bow has to be properly tuned and you must spend the time to tune your bow to whichever broadhead you choose.

LOL yea, I have shot the Magnums and have had pretty good luck with those as well> I have not tried the Phatheads. Another very durable broadhead that I have shot is the Shuttle T's these things are as tough as nails

If you have a chance try those Schwackers sometime, like I said I have shot a lot of different broadheads but the exit wounds on the animals I have killed is just impressive I am talking a 4-5 inch exit wound on my Kudu and my Nyala. My Warthog Dropped in his tracks and the Nyala took about five steps and the Kudu only went maybe 20-30 yds.

Another nod for Wac Em heads. Triton 3 blade is a very tough cut-on-contact head that in my experience lives up to their claims. I have never shot any african game with them as I have not been to Africa yet, but a buddy of mine shot Impala, Gemsbok, Kudu and Warthog last year with them and raves about their performance.

I know here in the states the argument of fixed vs. expendables is one of the classic bowhunting topics.. It seems to change somewhat when the drawing of blood can cost you 2 or 3 or 4 or more thousand dollars whether the animal is recovered or not I use Muzzy 100gr 3 blades - last year I took a couple Wasp Jakhammers with me to RSA. really just for the hell of it.. My PH and I decided to shoot a cull impala ram with one just to see how it performed. It was a pass thru, the blades opened and the ram died (23yd shot). That evening we were visiting with the ranch owner and told him we had used a mechanical on the ram and while my Afrikaans is somewhat limited, I could tell he frowned upon the use of mechanicals.. Rest of the trip was all Muzzy 100s! They fly just as straight - but you have to spend the time to tune each BH to each arrow!

That is very reassuring that you were seeing a pass through with the German Kinetics Broadheads on a Gemsbok. And also nice to note that they group well.

Are you going for Cape Buffalo? I am getting ready to start shooting mine. Been shooting field points (200 gr) and am trying to decide what kind of broadhead target might hold up to such punishment.

after over 50 years of bow hunting I have shot a litle of everthing BUT mechinacles. they look to flemsy to me. was stuck on muzzy for a while. good head but did break some blades. have been shooting175 grain VPA 3 blade for the last 3 or 4 years. have one head I shot 11 deer with, another 7 before I lost it. sharpen razor sharp in just a few minutes. shot them in africa last year ,pass threw on 8 out of 9 animals. one of the zebras was 3/4 away and broadhead stoped in its heart. Tom I'm with Ya. Hard to beat a good ol 3 blade muzzy. I shoot 100 grains. I've tried various mechanicals and had crap luck with them. Even the rage and shwackers are junk imo. I have seen slip cam and mechanicals open premature several times especially with heavy haired animals like angora. Good ol fashioned muzzys have never failed me.
