Has there been any news or rumours of new DG cartridges coming to market? I was thinking the other day who it would be to breath some new life into classic chamberings.

Hornady's PRC line came to mind, what about a 375PRC or .416 PRC? They currently top at at .30cal.

What about Ruger? They've already made 375 and 416 Ruger, how about a .458 Ruger? It's been 14 years since the 416 Ruger was announced.

I know the general trend on the rifle front is that less and less manufacturers are producing DG capable rifles in 2023, but I have hopes that someone will continue to produce new innovation on the ammo front.

Any ideas? Where are some current caps that a modern cartridge could help fill in?

I wish they would just make more of the current DG rounds...for lower prices haha. I'm not a new cartridge type, but I always find them interesting.
My thought too. I have a 450 Rigby and the number of ammo manufacturers continues to decrease. There isn’t enough regular demand for the existing cartridges.

I know something about a British maker developing some new rounds. And thats all im saying

They will be similar to DWM series of cartridges of largest from back in the 30s the 9,3x70

Newton's cartrides which Ruger is based on ,, vom Hofe . And the Schuler medium like 11,2x72 i think diameter was.

And Canadian Magnum. Full lenght on .404 case ,non rebated ones which i think deserve a resurge since they were well made and gave what one looked for, plenty of years before RUM

I sure hope we get more ammo In many of the fine ones we have now for the time being.

Limited market, companies have little interest.

I would say that there aren’t big gaps except in supply. This isn’t long range target shooting pushing the envelope. This recipe is well understood.

Most people don’t plink with a 375/416/458, outside us lunatics. We already use the most advanced bullet technology available. Fast big bores were done by Weatherby already…few can handle the recoil. Modern cartridge design isn’t buying you much considering the bore diameter, but that’s been done too. Nostalgia rules the roost with big bores, so enthusiasts aren’t craving a 458 Creedmore, lol.

You may not know this, but the parent cartridge for the PRC line is the 375 Ruger. So in a way, the 375 PRC and 416 PRC already exists, but to their friends they are simply known as the 375 Ruger and 416 Ruger.

I was one bid away from winning a BRNO 602 in 450 Rigby at Rockisland Auction.

I'd like just to see more ammo on the shelves for existing cartridges instead of something new.

Funny, I was just thinking about this yesterday. I think the major ammo companies would be doing us a favor if they produced ammo in calibers that already exist, rather than pouring research dollars into developing new cartridges….that you still can’t find anywhere. Hornady….are you listening?

Haha, fair enough.

I just figured that new cartridges coming to market = more options = more competition = lower prices.

Hornady seems to be one of the few companies that continues to show innovation with new cartridge designs.

The Ruger 375/416 for example opened up the market for what was traditionally limited to expensive Magnum length actions for more affordable rifles with standard length actions.

The cheapest Ruger 416 im currently seeing is $128.75 per box vs $219 for the Rigby. That's not insignificant.

It just feels like it's been decades since anything new has been released in the DG cartridge world.

I’m not sure I follow this logic. When the .300 prc was released, the .300 win mag didn’t drop in price. When the 28 nosler came about, the 7mm mag didn’t become more affordable. What makes you think if a .458 ruger came out that .458 Lott would drop in price?

DG cartridges have a very small following and most are reloading anyways due to cost anyways. Most ammo manufacturers are flat out producing shooting ammunition, let alone hunting ammunition. They are not going to dedicate press time to such a small niche in the market.

Sometimes you get things right the first time. There really haven't been many legit defensive handgun rounds in the last 100 years either. 357 sig and 40 maybe but that's it. 45 gap doesn't count......

9mm and .45acp have been around forever and still rule the roost. Not a whole lot of room for improvement. Same with DG calibers. Most guys like old school stuff and that stuff works great.

Although a 50BMG necked down to 375 would be pretty sick.....
