WSM VS WM

Hey guys I was just wandering what would be a better bullet for hunting the WSM or the WM and just compare them in general.

I dont have a 300 WSM or WM.. but I do have a 7mm WSM and have owned a 7mm RM previously.. (as well as a 300 WM)...

140 gr Barnes TTSX and 150gr TSX both do extremely well in my 7mm WSM.. they are about all I load for it anymore..


A lot about what would be recommended will depend on what you intend on hunting, and where..

Most here will agree that if youre talking a big bodied animal in Africa (eland, etc), to go heavy for caliber, and to go with a premium bullet like an a-frame or a tsx, etc.. regardless of the actual caliber of the rifle you are shooting..

If youre talking about taking your 300WM out on a mule deer hunt in NA, you'll probably get a much more varied response out of folk.. and much will depend on where you are actually hunting (are shots going to be at 100 yards, or 400 yards, etc..etc..)..

When I was considering a 300 mag I looked closely at the WSM. I actually decided against it for a couple of reasons. I wanted the flexibility of a larger case. But also, and probably more importantly, I didn't think I would appreciate the main advantage that comes with the smaller case - a lighter rifle. I dont mind recoil but I cant say I enjoy it either.

The real advantage of all of the mags is a heavier bullet at a flatter trajectory. 180gr will do it but I wanted to use 200 on moose.

My area has deer, moose and bear in the fall. I am thinking myself into circles as to which bullet to load but probably 200...or 180....no wait....

I have both a 300 WSM and 300 Win Mag. They are both great cartridges and would consider them esentally equal. If you are going to buy one for all around use I would recommend the 300 Win Mag. Only because you can purchase ammunition for it almost anywhere.

I shoot the WSM; if you reload, you save on powder and generally get the same velocities. As to bullet, my preference have been Swift as of late, the rifle likes them and them expand well.

Nothing wrong with the 300wsm. But the question really is why? I don't feel like it really has a purpose. If you need the 300wm it's probably because you want heavy bullets like the 190, 208, 212 etc but still want it to shoot fairly flat. Something a 30-06 couldn't do as well as a 300wm. The 300wsm being so short you can't really use those heavier bullets effectively. But yes you can shoot the smaller bullets super fast. But I don't understand why? You could shoot an30-06 with those lighter bullets and kill anything you want. And save on the powder and recoil.

I have a 300 WSM. Used it in Namibia several years ago. devastating results with Barnes TSX ammo 180 gr. Plan on using it again on my next trip to Africa.

IMO, “6 of one and a half dozen of the other” as the old saying goes. If you think you need a bit lighter and shorter of a rifle then the 300 WSM is for you. If you are hunting where ammo is less available the 300 WM is for you. If maximum velocity is important to you, then the 300 WM is it (barely).
I personally like the Barnes 165 TTSX up to elk size animals, but for Africa I like the 200 gr A-frame mainly for the little extra needed for zebra and up. African antelope just seem a little denser and heavier boned IMO.

This is today. Tomorrow I could easily change my old mind!

I would like a .270 WSM in a long action shooting really heavy for caliber bullets. A .270 Weatherby Magnum is more than I want. The .270 WSM fills a niche for me. What that niche is I have no idea but will publicize it as soon as I do.

I have a WM and love it, no personal experience with the WSM. On paper these cartridges are ballistic twins until you get into bullets in excess of 180 grains so I'd say it comes down to personal preference. Beside the ammo availability in remote places, I'd be concerned about the potential feeding issues of the WSM that others have experienced and written about due to the case girth.

I guess it would have been more appropriate to say bullets heavier than 150 grains than “very heavy for caliber bullets”.
