Here’s a few from days gone by! Don’t hunt waterfowl much anymore, let our lease go a few years ago but used to hunt just about every day of the season except Christmas or a travel day to get to a waterfowl spot.
If I do something this year it will have to be during the regular season for goose and duck. All the above pictures are from conservation season where the limit is 15 per person per day. During the migratory season the limits are 1 or 2.
Living in a country of 700 rivers, waterfowl hunting is the most popular form of hunting in our part of the world. I hunt any waterfowl which we eat, but bar headed geese ranks as my personal favorite.
This morning. No action photos. Left my phone in the vehicle. Grandson went along since school was off for teachers' ed day. We watched a couple thousand geese hit a field closed to hunting. Waited for them to finally leave but none came our way hiding on the fenceline. Walking back to the car I spotted a nice flock landing in a heavily timbered slough that I frequently jump shoot. Grandson was in the bag so he continued back to the car while dogs and I went back to the slough. Very rough going in either high grass along the creek or terrible thick tag alders, scrub maple, etc. Found more than just the bunch that dropped in. The slough was packed end to end. I took a couple over water and then three more passing overhead. They fell in the gawdawful debris behind us. Such a mess I couldn't even mark where they fell.
Man, we won't find those! But the dogs did. Had to walk all the way around to the other side for the two on water. A couple of miles through the worst shit imaginable. Lucky I didn't break a leg. Every time I go over there I say it will be the last time. But I'm not going to leave a dead bird. Ellie found the dead one but the live one gave them the slip. I wanted to look longer but my legs were getting rubbery. Time to go before I hurt myself. My A5 magnum was jamming because I forgot to swap out skeet 2.75" barrel spring and bushing for 3" waterfowl guts. Dumb and not the first time. Essentially a single shot today. A couple of these honkers could have had eggshell helmets. Must have been a second laying. They should be good eating. Both dogs are crippled up now and I'm fighting leg cramps nonstop. If I was at all in shape it still would have been a real bitch of a day. Every year frst day hunting is a killer. I'll be 73 next week. One of these days I'm gonna have to get old.
Usually I walk the decoys in to hunt and leave the vehicle at the road. I was too beat to haul everything out today and drove down to pick up bag of deeks and the geese. I'll call the farmer and apologize for driving on his alfalfa. He had a helluva crop but I'm sure he's already taken at least two cuttings. Shouldn't be baling up anything more this late.
We are very excited to come to Salzburg for the first time.
Should you at all have any interest in hunting with me and want to discuss different options please do not hesitate to contact me and we can set something up.
