Looking for stories, picture, advice on chasing Vaal Reebok next year in the eastern cape. It will be a tad bit out of the way from our home base so trying to make sure it will be worth the couple days in the high country. Also- optic rec for a 270 wsm for a Vaal hunt

Absolutely pursue a Vaalie if you can! Took a nice one (my avatar pic) with AH sponsor @NICK BOWKER SAFARIS with Ben Pringle as my PH in 2023. We hunted in the Winterberg Mountains. Got very lucky with my ram after it ran down the mountainside with several ewes onto a bench that we could slip around and surprise them, shot was 100 yards. Scenery alone is worth the trip. Also saw some younger rams, plenty of mountain reedbuck too. Only disappointment was it only took a single day. On the day of departure this area could be seen covered in snow from the main lodge miles away. Used a camp rifle in 300 WM, obviously overkill at the distance shot but would have been helpful when initially spotted on top of the mountain in the picture below (first seen at 500 yards).
Too small and too far for me.

I haven’t hunted one yet but will next year this time. I’ve hunted where they occur before though. I think it’s a unique part of Africa and worth saying you experienced. The terrain is really suited to glassing and a different hunt.

Who are you going with?

I tried finding your EC SA outfitter you used and looks like he moved to US?

Keep it coming…I have a hunt for a Vaal coming up this summer. Finally starting to get real.

I harvested one last year at the Eastern Cape. I shot a 6.5 creedmoor with sig sauer optics. The shot was 405 yards with a 5 mph cross wind. It was a dedicated small animal hunt for me so that was the reason for the CM. 24cc82db-ad92-4d6b-aa5b-ce996ea515e9.jpegThey are beautiful animals and the terrain is much different than most plains game hunts! Have a great time!

I posted a hunt report on this last year. Lots of lessons learned.

A hunt for a Vaal Reebok is my second favourite hunt, just after buffalo. It is fantastic and a must for anyone that likes to have a bit more of a challenge. They are tricky and require stealth, while you ascend up the mountain. Expect a long shot. I went with @KMG Hunting Safaris. Marius is fantastic. He warned me that their incredible eyesight will pick you out at a great distance. I shot mine at just under 300 yards. I am not sure I can adequately explain the sense of relief when he dropped. The terrain is amazing, the animal looks like something from a Dr Seuss book, the shot is challenging and you may find yourself sliding along on your belly, over the ridge of a mountain.

Vaal Rhebok-a unique east cape trophy. Best wishes on your hunt!

A great hunt for a unique animal. Went a couple times with Greg King at Braeside Safaris in EC outside Tarkastad. Outstanding area for Vaalie. Greg's favorite animal to hunt. Happy to provide more info to anyone.

I hunted mine with @KMG Hunting Safaris in 2021. I was expecting a 3-500 yard shot and spent a fair bit of time at the range with a Tikka 6.5 creed. I was hunting a completely small game safari, the Vallie was the largest animal on the list. (Caracal, Blue Diker, bat eared fox, Ardwolf, and vallie) After a solid climb up the mountain the shot turned out to be within bow range (75 yards).

Recommend You get in good physical shape! and prepare to shoot out to 500.

I got mine at Karoo Wild Safaris with PH and owner Victor Watson. He has an excellent operation and I highly recommend him.

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?

You might have edited your post on the PH in the Bubye. I know the PH and is a wonderful person and a fmaily man and runs a succesful business in Zim and just doesn't want the attention that the internet offers, the ugly kind.

Hello,

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.

Thank you for your time,

Andrew
