Looking for stories, picture, advice on chasing Vaal Reebok next year in the eastern cape. It will be a tad bit out of the way from our home base so trying to make sure it will be worth the couple days in the high country. Also- optic rec for a 270 wsm for a Vaal hunt

Absolutely pursue a Vaalie if you can! Took a nice one (my avatar pic) with AH sponsor @NICK BOWKER SAFARIS with Ben Pringle as my PH in 2023. We hunted in the Winterberg Mountains. Got very lucky with my ram after it ran down the mountainside with several ewes onto a bench that we could slip around and surprise them, shot was 100 yards. Scenery alone is worth the trip. Also saw some younger rams, plenty of mountain reedbuck too. Only disappointment was it only took a single day. On the day of departure this area could be seen covered in snow from the main lodge miles away. Used a camp rifle in 300 WM, obviously overkill at the distance shot but would have been helpful when initially spotted on top of the mountain in the picture below (first seen at 500 yards).
Too small and too far for me.

I’ve been fortunate to kill 2 Vaalies. Both were nice rams. Only have pics of the smaller one on my phone. Still a good animal.

I haven’t hunted one yet but will next year this time. I’ve hunted where they occur before though. I think it’s a unique part of Africa and worth saying you experienced. The terrain is really suited to glassing and a different hunt.

Who are you going with?

I tried finding your EC SA outfitter you used and looks like he moved to US?

Keep it coming…I have a hunt for a Vaal coming up this summer. Finally starting to get real.

I harvested one last year at the Eastern Cape. I shot a 6.5 creedmoor with sig sauer optics. The shot was 405 yards with a 5 mph cross wind. It was a dedicated small animal hunt for me so that was the reason for the CM. 24cc82db-ad92-4d6b-aa5b-ce996ea515e9.jpegThey are beautiful animals and the terrain is much different than most plains game hunts! Have a great time!

I posted a hunt report on this last year. Lots of lessons learned.

A hunt for a Vaal Reebok is my second favourite hunt, just after buffalo. It is fantastic and a must for anyone that likes to have a bit more of a challenge. They are tricky and require stealth, while you ascend up the mountain. Expect a long shot. I went with @KMG Hunting Safaris. Marius is fantastic. He warned me that their incredible eyesight will pick you out at a great distance. I shot mine at just under 300 yards. I am not sure I can adequately explain the sense of relief when he dropped. The terrain is amazing, the animal looks like something from a Dr Seuss book, the shot is challenging and you may find yourself sliding along on your belly, over the ridge of a mountain.

Vaal Rhebok-a unique east cape trophy. Best wishes on your hunt!

A great hunt for a unique animal. Went a couple times with Greg King at Braeside Safaris in EC outside Tarkastad. Outstanding area for Vaalie. Greg's favorite animal to hunt. Happy to provide more info to anyone.

I hunted mine with @KMG Hunting Safaris in 2021. I was expecting a 3-500 yard shot and spent a fair bit of time at the range with a Tikka 6.5 creed. I was hunting a completely small game safari, the Vallie was the largest animal on the list. (Caracal, Blue Diker, bat eared fox, Ardwolf, and vallie) After a solid climb up the mountain the shot turned out to be within bow range (75 yards).

Recommend You get in good physical shape! and prepare to shoot out to 500.

The king of the mountains !

I had the opportunity to hunt the "Vallie" last year in the Winterberg conservancy with Rory Kockott and Bevan Pienke. A huge territory where animals are free to roam.

This animal has an incredible eyesight and approching them from the bottom of the valley is impossible or almost ! You should arrive from the top of the mountain and be very cautious.

We spotted them down in a valley and we crawled in the slope to approach them but just before the shot, the ewes saw us and ran.
It was complicated because when they stopped, the time to range the distance and dial the turret, they ran again.
I shot my first round while I thought the ram was a bit further, keeping the previous dialling and I aimed just above its back. But my bullet hit exactly where I aimed, just above it back !
They kept running in the slope and when they stopped on the plateau in front of us, they gave me more time. I dropped the ram at 546 meters (597 yards) with my Blaser in 6.5 Creedmoor and a Hornady ELD-X 143 gr pushed with Vihtavuori N160. The scope I'm using is a Delta Stryker 5-50x56 fitted with 20 MOA Tier-one rings on a Blaser saddle mount.

This animal is beautiful, even if mine was definitely not a gold medal, but its fur is unique. It is known for being very agressive against their own but also against the mountain reedbuck who is also quite common in the area.

By the way, it's a good idea to book a mountain reedbuck when you go hunting in these mountains. This species is a bit easier to bag.

I was lucky to get mine 1 hour after the vaal rhebok.

On my list as I have struck out them twice. Would like Sharpe's and Cape Grysbok and Suni as well...

I've worked harder for Vaal rhebok than I have for some buff and ele. You need good mountain boots, your best long distance rifle and a "never quit" mindset. They are challenging.

Another T10 option within a short distance of some vaalies are the blue duikers.

Man y’all make this sound challenging- I need to head to the range!

Besides the rifle, which either you need to know your dial ups or it's a rental and the PH knows it, the best advice I can give is to get good at making field rests from whatever you've got. If a tripod, you will need some support for your elbow or back. Have someone stand behind you or lean into you. You might only have a daypack or you might need to make a quick rest across the truck hood if you jump some. Just get creative and if it's not steady, improve it. I wouldn't take a shot with my reticle doing big figure 8's across the animal at long distance. The shots are long and 250 would be short. Good luck!

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?
