Still researching outfitters (and you outfitters that messaged me privately, don't worry!), but I recall running into these guys at SHOT show this year. I dug through all my SHOT booty and found their brochure. Their show specials seemed reasonable from what I remember but can't really recall the specifics. From what I can gather, they've been around for a while but their prices tend to be a little high. But what stood out was that I recall having a chat with one of their PHs about cape buffalo and the caliber requirements. The PH pretty much said "yeah the law says 375, but you can do it with a 300 Winmag and nobody's going to ask". So I did a little digging for reviews on the Internet and found a (poorly) written 1-star review about how boring hunting is and that there's no cover during a drought but what stood out was that he rented what was supposed to be a 375 from them for a buffalo and they gave him a 300WM, necessitating the PH to use his rifle to finish off the buffalo.

I find it more than a little coincidental that this almost exact situation has happened with someone else. This sends up a couple of red flags for me, especially in regards to ethics and compliance with the law. I'm not really looking for commentary on "well, that other guy should have checked what caliber he was given", this almost suggests a pattern with them.

Otherwise, their brochure looks nice!

Never hunted with them but they have been around quite a while which suggests they must be pretty good at their job.2025 i was at Nashville looking a buffalo hunt for myself and son.Spoke to dozens of outfitters who all promised to get back to me,very few did.T&C were one of the view that did.I chose another outfitter (who also responded). It was the area that convinced me to choose them.Thats all I can tell you.

HAVE HUNTED WITH T&C A HANDFULL OF TIMES, ALWAYS BEEN A FIRST CLASS OUTFIT WITH ME AND MY SON. WE ALWAYS USE OUR OWN GUNS IF LEGALLY FEASIBLE.

T&C apparently has a long and pretty good reputation. However, I remember a dust up from about 10 years ago that might be cause for concern. I knew one of the guys involved in the hunt. Like most people said, two sides to every story. The response from Thormahlen would eliminate him from my consideration.

I’m not sure the point of this post. There are a number of PHs that will tell you privately a 300 with good bullets will kill a buffalo. If a comment at a show doesn’t sit well with you just move on to a different outfitter.

Trying to determine if this is a single PH that plays fast and loose or an institutional mindset.

hmm. yeah, I'm not particularly pleased with Peter's response there. I think I saw another thread here where he was withholding someone else's trophies too. Probably best to move on and find someone else.

Maybe you should have chose a different title.

Seems like you already made a decision you are not going to use them based off your interaction. Seems an attempt to stir drama.
Far from it. If that's your interpretation, that's 100% on you.

Good day.

You didn’t even ask a question in your post. I’m not sure how someone would interpret it differently. An individual who’s never hunted Africa passing along a conversation he can’t fully remember and tying it in to a 1 star review somewhere.

That's why I posted here to get more information about them. The title was effective for everyone else who participated in this conversation except you.

So this isn’t actually what you were looking for.

They hold concessions in a few countries and book clients all around Africa. Pretty respected around the hunting community.

Are you planning on hunting Africa anytime soon? I’m sure you would have a good hunt with them

I hunted hippo, croc, and buffalo with T&C on the Chobe river in 22, and had an excellent experience. Peter’s response above may not have been his best moment, but very few PH are saints, and they frequently take the blame for problems not of their own making. Peter ran a happy camp that also took care of business in the uniquely African way. More personally, I watched him firmly correct one of his employees without berating or degrading the fellow, while still making his point very clearly. All in all I liked how he did things. Peter will do his best to make you successful, even perhaps in spite of yourself. If that upsets you, another outfitter might be a better choice.

Finally, call Peter and ask him about the conversation above. I heard his side of the story, and his perception was that his good will had been vigorously abused. His post was a mistake, no doubt, but he was also aggressively provoked.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
Thank you,
Bob

Good morning. I see that you had a Sauer 202 for sale for $3,000. Did you sell it at that price?
I have one for sale as well. I listed it (on here ) at $3,000 as well. Is the price high, low or right where it should be?

Thanks. Alex. [redacted] in case you want to call me to discuss further. I appreciate your time help and support.
