The 243 is among the best rifles

Being the troublemaker I am, I'll just pull the pin and walk away. :LOL:
@skydiver386
I wouldn't lower my standard or dignity and watch such rubbish. Nice try son but no bite this time.
It will just be a peddler of lies and rubbish.

I perfer the 244/6mm Remington, for its longer neck and less taper.....less trimming!
I helped bring the 22 CM to the for front and yet absolutely detest the 6.5 but just started playing with the 6mm CM and it may have some usefulness. In truth the 243 necked to .224 and a 40 degree shoulder (aka 224 Durham Jet) is an all time favourite as is the 6MM Ackley Improved. The 22 CM
is great in 8" twist with 75gr Berger's or in 11-12" twist with light twist as both will smoke a 22-250.

Now go on and stir the hornet's nest. While you contemplate some academic ballistics!

Gun manufacturers and canned gun advocates who chop off their barrel have ruined the 243 imo ( it is a over bore cal and needs a 24-26 inch barrel) pretty sad days in the gun world seeing short barrel production

a .243 imo doesn’t hold a candle to a 240 Roy , 257 Roy or a proper twist 25-06
Same as the 6.5cm vs the 264wm , 6.5prc , ect
Just food for thought.

I see the 243 as a good varmint predator cartridge. I do not see it as a deer or antelope rifle. I have a 243 on an ar10 platform and 2 @ 6mm Remington rifles . The 6mm remington is superior to the 243 in all ways except for ammo availability. I do not understand how the 243 pushed the 257 roberts into history. For cxp2 game there are so many better choices than a 243 winchester.

I’ve taken quite a few whitetail deer in my time, and I’ve taken the majority of them with a .243. I just recently bought a Howa superlite .243 with a 16.25” barrel, 4lbs 7oz, a very lightweight rifle for walking the woods.

I hope to fill out the last 7 of my crop damage permits tomorrow, and my .243 is in the truck ready to go.

I love my 243, there is an oldtimer here in BC who shot everything from Grizzly to goat with a partition out of a 243. Just don't overthink it

My uncle hunts deer with a .243 and a .243 only. He has taken dozens of deer over the decades, never lost one. He’s been using 100 grain Partitions; I gave him a couple boxes ~15 years ago and he’s probably all set for life with that. He’s like the proverbial “man with one gun” and (due to a conservative attitude rather than any sort of financial constraints) the kind of guy who sighted in sometime last century and uses but one or two rounds a year to take those one or two deer.
It seems to me that the problem with the .243 is folks trying to use varmint bullets on deer and/or trying to push long range shots because it’s a relatively high velocity cartridge. If used with premium 100 grain bullets, and shots taken broadside within 200 yards, the .243 Winchester will take any deer there is. I would draw the line at a 400 pound game weight, along with the 200 yard limit. Obviously some people have had success with longer shots and larger game, but within the aforementioned parameters it’s just a pretty sure thing.
Personally I have no use for any centerfire cartridge smaller than a .270, but I respect the .243 when it’s put to use properly.

I think you have a great outfit (y)

I personally love the .243 and think it does it's job perfectly.
I have a Churchill .243 based on a M98 action with an 18" barrel and load the 87gn V-Max in it.
I use this projectile based on the recommendation of hunters I know in Australia who cull Fallow deer with it. 100's of deer...
I have had people criticise my choice of cartridge, barrel length and projectile and I have to be honest and say I really don't care...
And if anyone reading this likes their .243 I would advise them to not care either... just go out and enjoy it (y)

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen actually held and admired a Pre 64 .243 Win while on holiday with witnesses. It was only after he was informed with a chuckle that he had to fein his disdain for the cartridge and continue to profess his rhetoric. It took a moment for him to figure out what to do and to describe it as a moment for the ages would be to put it mildly. Sadly I left my phone in the truck.

It is slightly better...flatter and a tad bit faster. Winchester had a way better marketing department back during those caliber battle days with Remington, more than once the inferior caliber won.

I shot my first deer with a 243, I would never use it as a go to deer rifle as a grown man but for younger shooters at a reasonable distance the caliber works just fine with a good shoulder shot on a whitetail. The shoulder is the sweet spot for the 243.

I saw a couple of posts mention the 6.5 Needmore. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how a caliber designed to punch paper became so popular when the best 6.5, the original 6.5, the 6.5 that has been with us longer than the 30-06 never got the love it deserves. The 6.5x55 Swede is a beautiful whitetail caliber!

@Forrest Halley
I plead the 5th mate. I can neither confirm or deny your statement.
No pictures no proof.
Yes it was a nice rifle and it wasn't a 243 it was the AI version so just marginally better than a 243 but still useless

When I was in high school in the 1960s one of my prize possessions was a book by Francis E Sell on Deer Hunting. He mentioned the 243 Win and also its shortcomings. The shortcomings have been somewhat corrected in the 6mm creedmoor- primarily tightening up the twist so that it could stabilize really long high BC bullets. Otherwise the velocity slows and the trajectory drops off the edge of a table at 300 yards- But on second thought, shooting an animal larger than a good sized dog at 300 yards with either 6mm bore seems a chumps game.

Tt Jake is asking for a cash transaction. No disrespect intended, Just trying to verify who I am talking to. Thank you. Respectfully. Dan

Hey my friend, I am returning to SA for a Cape Buffalo hunt in June 26. My outfitter has suggested Highveld but I have read some poor reports. Wondering how satisfied you were with your mounts from them? Thanks in advance.
