Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase a 1-?x24 scope of some sorts as an optic for the .375H&H barrel on my M03.

As I'm a bit of a swaro fan boy, my thoughts are going to the Z6i 1-6x24 scope. However, when taking this with the swarovski rail, there are only 3 reticles available. The 4-I, the BRT-I and the LD-I. The latter one is definitely not to my taste, but the former isn't neither, as I do not like these heavy duplex lines so close to the actual cross hair, it take us up to much of the view in my opinion (the BRT-I makes no sense to my mind for a rather close up scope). Now that being said, I have not yet looked through one yet, so I'm just going off the pictures I find online.

For those who have experience with it, is the 4-I also disturbing to you in real life, or it does not bother you?

Here the pic's to compare:

Now the Z8i 1-8x24 (I do not really need the 8x and especially not with the increased cost) does have the 4A-I option, which I much prefer:

Thanks for your input. If you have alternative suggestions, I'm open to them, as long as they are compatible with either Swaro Rails, or Zeiss LM rails. And as long as it has a true 1x and a minimum of 6x.

Oh and just as an explanation, I have not been able to find any Ring mounts compatible with Mauser M03 mounting system. I currently have SR rail mount, Zeiss rail mount and a Docter Red dot mount. (so perhaps I could go for a 1.7x or something, and keep the Docter mount in my pocket, just in case.)

Hmmm, options and questions...

Cheers,

V.

England year round and Namibia x5.
Don't give up looking for rings. They are out there.

Contact Steve at Ivythorne Sporting, I picked up my M03 mounts from him and I'm sure if he has any more he will post them internationally.
A Google search will let you find his website and contact details.
Then you will have more options.

My choice for my .375H&H was a Steiner Ranger 1-4x24 with illuminated reticle.

To go with my .300WinMag barrel I have the Steiner Ranger 2-8x42 with illuminated reticle.

Both are available on Optics-Trade.eu for research.

The Swarovski 4-I in the 1-6x24 is one of my favorite reticles. I prefer the closeness of the post / tight window. To me, even without the illumination on, this is still a very good reticle for low light.
I have a couple of non-illuminated 1-6x24’s with a what seems be more like 4-A’s.
I like the 4-I much better, because of the closeness of the heavy post.

I have
Swarovski 1.7-10x42 with R-I reticle. The dot is iliuminated.
It is absolutely perfect for huntig, Iwoudnt change it for nothing.

Zeiss Diavary 3-12x56, with 4C reticle, and iliuminated dot, reticle is almost the same, so perfect. Another one of my hunting optics.

Meopta meostar R2, wide angle, 1-6x24, 4C reticle, same as other two, with iluminated dot, also perfect. For driven hunts.
So, if you go with Swaro R-I, you will not be wrong, in fact you wil be delighted.

Keep in mind, for hunting you really need a simple reticle, eye-friendly, preferably with iluminated dot.
For target shooting, any other (more complicated) reticle may be considered.

Hi @Adrian, @WAB @mark-hunter @ldmay375 ,

thanks for your input so far, to perhaps further explain my conundrum: I will have my Mauser M03 with three barrels, .223REM, .300WinMag and .375H&H, for which I want three scopes. One I have, which is a Swaro Z4i 2.5-10x56 SR with 4A-I reticle, currently mounted for the .300WinMag.

The .375H&H barrel I want to mate to a LPVO with perhaps a red dot back up on a separate mount, as an all-around DG set-up, which is still capable of taking a gemsbuck at 150m if necessary.

The .300WinMag is my general EU hunting setup, equally good for all PG.

While the .223REM is for practice, varmints (fox) and perhaps tiny 10 and such in Africa.

So 2 more scopes to add to the one I have.

Cheers,

V.

I also like the 4-I reticle, and do not find the closeness of the heavy outside parts a disadvantage, in fact I think they help me aim quickly and do not hinder precision.

Absolutely love the Swarovski Circle Dot which is the CD-I reticle or the 4A-IF in The Z8i for big game. Took a Cape Buffalo with it and illumination late in the day on black hide works brilliantly. I do prefer FFP for big game though and its a pity the new Swaros are all SFP - mine is the old PV1.25-4. The circle dot draws your eye to the centre, its just like an electronic peep sight. But its a personal preference thing so you must look and hopefully use a few if you can before you buy. I also bought S&B's circle dot version but the Swaro version is nicer IMHO.

I also bought M03 ringmounts from Optics Trade because the local distributor after telling us they had it in stock when I bought my rifle could only say it was on backorder after 4 months waiting. So I cancelled my order and placed an order in Feb with Optics Trade and got it 10 days later, they were excellent to deal with. If they say its in stock when you order its shipped straight away. 30mm M03 Ring mounts.

I am actually having Swaro change the reticle on a Z6 EE 1-6x24 from CD-I to 4-I. I like the CD and wouldn’t swap it out if only the dot illuminated. The illuminated circle actually washes out the target at last light for me. I’ve tested it on deer at last light vs the 4-I and the difference is striking.

Relative to the string above, the EE can only be refitted with the 4-I. The 4a-I is not an option.

I have this one:

Can be found for much less through the various retailers. We hunt in low light in the winter in the heavy old growth timber. This is the best scope I’ve ever had.

I also have an EE with 4-I and one with the circle dot. I prefer the 4-I. The circle dot would be more likable to me, if the circle did not illuminate.

Agreed, seems like a significant and unusual miss by Swaro.

I have two Swaro Z8i scopes with the 4A-IF reticle and we both really like it. For my 375 it's a 1-8x24 with the rail mount option on a Contessa mount to the Blaser R8 barrel. My wife has a 1.7-13.3x42 on her 375 because that's what she wanted.
