Rank the Solids

I’ve had success with Cutting Edge and Barnes Banded solids. Obviously, you should shoot what regulates best in your double.

Hard to top the performance of a machined solid assuming you're not putting them in an old double rifle.

I've read that flat nose is better then round nose and depressed noses like the Woodleigh Hydro's create the biggest wound channel with the straightest line penetration.

Hard not to listen to the pros on this one and shoot the best you can get your hands on when your life might depend on its performance.

I only had experience with the Woodleigh Hydrosolids. Wicked cruel on my Cape Buffalo. It just shuddered and dropped

That sounds decisive!! The flat point Barnes Banded Solids should do almost as well as the Hydrostabilized solids.

What calibre rifle? And why did you decide to use solids over preferred softs?

Woodleigh Hydro solids (and Swift"s new solid) are half way between a solid and a hollow point. The theory is the cupped point will generate a pressure wave ahead of the bullet, dealing additional flesh damage.

North Fork also makes a cupped point solid. But theirs is a bit more like a true "hollow point" bullet.

Again though... I dont know why there is so much discussion in this thread. You do not get to pick your projectiles with a double rifle like you do with a bolt action rifle. Anyone with experience loading for doubles will tell you, they are very picky when it comes to bullet selection. The gun will only truly regulate with the bullet it was originally built for and perhaps other very similar bullets. If the gun was set up with traditional solids than it is unlikely it will work properly with more modern brass/copper bullets.

I don’t know because I have not used all of them, but ones I have used Hornady, NF CPS, Woodleigh softs, they all group close. Now I don’t go for 1 -2 MOA, at 50 or 100, As long as they r within 3-5 in at 50 I’m good.

Maybe I’m just lucky, but my 470 NE seems to shoot several different projectiles well. Currently prefer CEB 500gr. And with a half grain drop in powder their Raptors and Barnes TSX shoot to the same point.

What powder and how many grains?

I’m running 83gr of Reloader 15.5 behind the CEB 500gr solid. Speeds are right at 2100fps.

It varies from gun to gun and depends on what ammunition the gun was originally regulated with.

My gun was regulated with Norma PH softs. I opened one measured the powder and use it to regulate, it has woodlegh softs

Hello,
I might be able to help you out depending on how many you need. I could probably spare 50-75 .285g A-Frames. They are factory pulls that look like new. Let me know if you are still looking,
Thanks,
Gary

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.
