I’m looking into an optic for my Winchester model 70 safari express rifle. Scope vs red dot. This will be my dangerous game rifle primarily Buffalo. I’ve looked at 1x 4 and vortex, Holosun dot sights just can’t decide

I would mention, personally, I found a difference between the 1-5 vs the 1-6. Found the 1-5 just lacking, but agree with the sentiment of a 1-6 Leupold. No need for a CDS.

I have a Leica Amplus6 1-6×24 illuminated on both my Mod 70 416Rem Mag and CZ550 450 Rigby Rimless. Love the scope and taken Cape Buffalo with both rifles.

I agree with @Fatback, the VX5 2-10 is about the perfect scope, 2x gets you in close for buffalo, 10x allows for longer shots in case a nice plainsgame animal appears out in the distance. For my upcoming hunt I am only hunting buffalo and elephant, so I took off my 2-10 and put on my Leupold Patrol 1x6 and sighted in at 50 yards.

I'd definitely go scope rather than red dot. The .416 Rem is very capable beyond the usable distance of a red dot.

I just scoped my new Blaser R8 .416 Rem rifle with a 1-8x24 scope, I could not believe the accuracy that I achieved with this rifle and scope. Like you this will be mainly a buffalo rifle but it will cover a large number of uses with a good scope on top.

Good luck with your new setup.

I am a 1.something to 10 guy.

I would check the trajectory of your bullet on a ballistics app. Hornady is free and preloaded with various calibres and ammo. You will see that a 50 m zero is not great. The bullet starts 2 inches low and touches zero only at 50 m before dropping off. A 100 m zero is better, being withing 1 inch of zero from about 30 m to 100 m. A 50 m zero results in the bullet only being within 1 inch of zero from about 40 m to 60 m.

I would advise a scope, 1-6 allows me to shoot to 200 m or so while a 1x with illuminated dot in the centre can be used like a red dot sight- both eyes open. So you have an accurate first shot and can then approximate a red dot for the follow up.
You never know when you might need to put a backup shot in at 100m or a kudu steps out at 200 m.

I followed the advice of a few members here putting mine together. It’s a new production 416 Rem Mag. I got a Leupold VX-6HD 1-6x Firedot on one of the sales that’s currently running. It is the CDS version. I found that iron sights on my rifle were dead on at 40 yards. I used Warne steel bases and rings to mount the scope and add some weight. I need to do something about the overhang on the front base. My two groups with starting load of 300 grain TSX with H335 have been Sub 1” at 100 yards. Zero has held just fine through 30 rounds off sticks and a lead sled while ladder testing powder charges. I looked through the Vortex Razor HD 1-10x24 and Sig Tango 1-6 and the Leupold really impressed me compared to them. The Razor would have been acceptable at a MUCH lower price point, but it is a rather large scope, which I didn't like. The Tango was a very quick no. Leupold seems to have figured something out at the 1x and 2x magnification that Vortex and Sig haven’t- at lower levels of mag the Leupold image has much, much less distortion. As others have said, with the Firedot at 1x, the VX6 is functionally similar to a red dot. But a 200 yard shot will be much easier at the available 6x zoom level.
