Hi there, planning to hunt Namibia for PG in 2016 and starting to make a few plans.

I do a little taxidermy and will mount my trophies myself, so to try and cut down on the processes required and make importation easier I'd like to have all my capes tanned and shaved ready to mount over there, and then shipped over to Australia with cleaned skullcaps.

It might be a long shot but does anyone have a reccommendation for a quality taxidermy company in the Windhoek area that can be relied upon to produce a quality tan?

Thanks!

Jerome will know the answer to this one.

I would recommend you using Taxidermy Studio & Tannery in Otjiwarongo. They run a professional tanning facility that produces some of the best tanning I have seen. They also understand the taxidermy process so your skins would be treated accordingly. They unfortunately do not have a website but you can reach their office by email at mbeyer@iway.na.

Many thanks for your reply Jerome, that sounds like what I'm after. I'll flick them an email!

Cheers

Riser did decent job on tanning giraffe the rest I sent home salted to be tanned here, I recommend tanning here in states if at possible. Giraffe was ok but still lots of shaving, rehydrating And stretching.

Nakara tannery in Windhoek did most of my half and full rug work ( half zebra and kudu, full oryx, blue wildebeest) in 2013, top notch service. Perhaps give them an email to see what they can do for you. The exception being my half giraffe, which they apparently don't do, was done by what I believe is now called Tannery Etosha in Outjo. They did a poor job with it, would not recommend. My mounts (kudu, zebra and giraffe) were done by Hunters Pride in Witvlei, again great work.

I just received the rest of my safari back from tannery here. Riser did a great job with the hides best I have seen in 5yrs as far as being prepped to tan here in states and again I would have nothing mounted there, taxidermy here in states is much better over all.

..................possible. Giraffe was ok but still lots of shaving, rehydrating And stretching.

So it would fit the form? or....?

Yes giraffe hide very thick. But saved all cape from slippage but thickens when rehydrated rubbery shave it thinner and mounted nice

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.
