One Species of Plains Game

Bushbuck because of how secretive they are in cover, if open country would have to give the nod to Springbuck.
I've only hunted Vaal Rhebuck once and really enjoyed the ruggedness and openness of the mountains, could see that as a favorite but somewhat expensive trophy fees. Then you're hunting the same terrain as for Mountain Reedbuck, so may as well add that one! This is an impossible request.

If I had to choose just one it would be kudu or bushbuck…but only one?!? Kudu…no bushbuck…one of them…I think. Oh wait, tracking eland….ugh.

Warthog. On a bad day it is culling ...on a good day cunning beyond belief.Good eating as well.

Why is the bushbuck considered special? Can experienced hunters elaborate, please?

I think it is for a few reasons. One is that they are the smallest of the 4 common spiral horns, but have the same affinity for heavy cover and being sneaky, which makes them a harder target to find. Because of that, some people make bushbuck their top priority on a 7-10 day hunt, and never connect with a good ram.

Another reason is that they can have an attitude of a very dangerous animal much larger than they are, especially when wounded.

And lastly, I think some of it is contagious excitement passed on from the PH. Most of them grow up hunting them and there is similar love for them like there is for whitetail in the states. People who grow up and keep hunting them get very very excited about hunting them. That excitement is contagious.

Not surprised to see kudu and eland on here from what I’ve heard about them. Bushbuck has been a pleasant surprise. I thought at least someone would’ve said Waterbuck by now though. Can anyone comment to why that wouldn’t be their choice? Because it ain’t a spiral horn? Not an exciting hunt? Or just generally underrated?

Like, I mentioned before, I don't think I could pick just one. But Waterbuck would be one I wouldn't pass up. It can be a very exciting hunt, and they are underrated in my opinion.

Are you trying to make a list for a future hunt?

I am. I’m going on a Cape buffalo hunt in Limpopo, with a few extra days in the Free State. Right now I’m budgeted to 1 animal in the 2-3500k range, 1 in the 1-2k range, and then some of the smaller stuff like Impala and Springbok (and my wife requires a warthog, which I ain’t mad over). I was leaning Waterbuck on the expensive side, and either black wildebeest or bushbuck for the middle

Baboons

Anything in else in the mountains or plains.

I miss the old day when you could shoot 20 of them, I don't think non-residents can do culls anymore.
of course u can
happy for you to come shoot 2 of them
i had a deal on here for baboon cull hunt, didnt get a single bite

for me it would be buff, over and over again

Me, Buffalo would the first choice.
Myself, Then Black Wildebeest.
I cant say I would pass on a good warthog.

I guess that covers me, myself and I.

One question I hear a lot is something along the lines of “if you could only hunt one thing what would it be?” For my normal company the answer is either whitetail or turkey, with the occasional duck or elk guy.
So on that same note, if you could only hunt one species of plains game for the rest of your life, what would it be? What about that hunt captivates you?
From a meat perspective:
Impala. Most delicious venison all of Africa has to offer. Their liver is a particularly favorite delicacy of mine.

From a trophy perspective:
Sable. I mean… just look at those horns !

I have track hunted eland and it is awesome! Also kudu hunting as they are slick and so many different shapes. I will hunt kudu each and Everytime I go to Africa. Bushbuck would be #3.

For the more expensive one, I would go with Waterbuck, Eland, or Nyala. The Middle one I would go with a Wildebeest, Gemsbok, or Bushbuck. Smaller ones I would go with Impala, Blesbuck, Springbuck, Warthog.

With a decent outfitter, you can pick any combination of those and you are going to have an awesome time.

And if you have been leaning toward Waterbuck because that seems more appealing to you, you should go for it. A lot of people overlook waterbuck. I know people that had no interest in hunting Waterbuck or Eland, decided to go after them later in the trip, and then afterward said those were their favorite hunts of the trip.

Always said that the day I get tired of hunting big kudu, eland, impala and gemsbok is the day I should stop.

I think your original question was what “Plains game” for the rest of your life over again & many times ?

Then I think Bushbuck, that’s what I hunt when ever I get a chance when not working !
Lots of different animals encountered while stalking them along rivers & riven country, including Elephants.

Klipspringer is another favourite but don’t find them cheaply enough to do all the time.

Warthog is also all the time as affordable, Reedbuck is challenging with free range Nyala !

But Bushbuck is it, many subspecies, can do it on your own, don’t need big crew to track & handle/carry out, challenging/can be dangerous hunt, not bad to eat !

I bought a great deal of the brass he had for sale, plus I already had many hundred rounds.

How much brass are you looking for?

Hi Green Chile, I just recently bought a 470 NE barrel for my Thompson Center TCR 83-87 single shot. Im just looking for some 470 NE to shoot at the range just to try it out. I dont need anything special but I just wanted to see what you have left. I dont necessarily even need a full box.
Thanks
Bill
