Would someone venture a guess as to a time period or area this may have come from?

My wife’s Grandfather immigrated from Germany in the mid 70’s, this was in his safe when he passed and along with a Berretta M95E have made it into “our” collection.

I do not know if it was brought over with him or if he bought it in the US. I can find no markings on it what so ever, no proof marks or anything, even under the stock line. The left side of the receiver looks rounded like the markings may have been polished off.

It is in 8x57 with .323 bore. One standing one folding leaf. Set triggers. The claw mounts are well fitted and tight. All in all the fit and finish are very good and it is great condition with a very nice bore. I loaded some ammo tonight and will test fire it tomorrow.

Any info or even suggestions would be appreciated.

I’m going to venture a guess that is is early post-war - maybe late 1940s, based in part on the scope. It’s German through and through. Most often, the last two digits of the serial number are stamped everywhere and every piece they can fit on, and sometimes some more digits if there is room. I can see a single “47” on the bolt release. I’m surprised there are not the “BUG” proofs on it. Cool gun.

A very nice rifle with loads of family history. Are you sure that it's 8x57 and not 8x60 ? Many rifles built in the inter-war period were made in, or converted to, 8x60 due to prohibitions on 8x57.

There are many highly knowledgeable members on this site who can provide advice on the rifles background. Likewise there are some mauser experts on the **NOT**PERMITTED** forum.

@Bert01 - Kinda unrelated to your first post but I wanted to ask...

You also mentioned a "Beretta M95E". I'm not sure what that is. Did you mean a Beretta M1951? Or maybe your wife's grandfather was really into .50 calibers and had a Barrett M95?

Sorry BeeMaa, I meant a Benelli not Beretta. It’s an offhand target pistol For 25 meter events chambered in .22lr.

I test fired it today and checked the cases for any irregularity’s, everything looks good and the fired cases match the loaded brass as far as I can tell without calipers. I was shooting from a sitting position using the iron sights and it was about 12” high at 75 yards but not a horribly group. I’m a little sore today and probably not shooting my best, I was practicing with a new to me 375 Ruger African yesterday and let one get away from me on the 4th shot of a string. Didn’t get it in the pocket of my shoulder good and it let me know.

Hallo Marius- do you have possibilities for stags in September during the roar? Where are your hunting areas in Romania?

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on another rifle but would love to see your rifle first, any way you could forward a pic or two?
Thanks,

Love your rifle! I'm needing a heavier rifle for Africa. Sold my .375 Dakota Safari several trips ago. Would you have any interest in a trade of some sort involving the custom 338/06 I have listed here on the site ( I have some room on my asking price. I also have a large quantity of the reloading components and new Redding dies as well as a box of A-Square Dead Tough ammo.
