Looking for an outfitter

The time has come to go back to Africa, this time for Cape Buffalo. I went many years ago to SA for plains game and had a great time. We hunted concessions that were fenced. The properties were huge and the fence only came into play one time on the second day. When I realized we were using the fence to our advantage I stopped the hunt. I had a sincere talk with the PH to let him know that the hunt was more important than the kill. This was contrary to what he experienced in the past but, to his credit, did make a change in our approach.

This time I want what I would call a Hemingway or Ruark hunt; wide open free range. I’m looking for possibly two different outfitters. The first is would be for me and my wife, possibly one other hunting friend and his wife. The wives don’t hunt so would need a guide during the day. This outfitter could be a more rustic than the second choice.

The second outfitter would be the same free range, hard hunting type, but with better accommodation's. My plan is to offer this trip to friends; hunters and non-hunters. If I get others that want to join us I will pick the second outfitter. If I do not get others that are interested then I will choose the first outfitter.

I will be hunting with a 470 Nitro double rifle and a low powered scoped 416 Rem mag bolt action back up rifle. I might be interested in taking more than one buffalo.

I’d try and narrow down what you actually want from the hunt. What is your budget? If this hunt is equally about your wife and friends I’d tell you to go to the Caprivi in Namibia. You could hunt buffalo while she does some tourist things, then you could transfer with same outfitter to central Namibia for plains game and a different landscape. If this hunt is primarily about your buffalo hunt I’d tell you to look into Zambezi valley in Zimbabwe. It’s a true tracking hunt in dangerous game country and you’ll work for your buffalo but there will not be thousands of animals for your wife to view and there will be tsetse flies that bite. Certain outfitters might allow it but most concession areas are not suited to large groups like a large ranch would be. It’s a quiet hunt where you work for your trophies and leave with a few good ones at the end of 10 or 14 days. It’s a very different experience than ranch hunting. So again, I’d tell you to decide what you want, if the hunt is primarily about your wives and inviting friends or the wild Africa experience?

I understand. The priority is on my hunt. So, if a choice needs to be made it would be for my first option, to hunt alone. I would give my wife the option to come along knowing the accommodations will be rustic. Thank you for your reply.

I have been to Niassa myself very long ago about 15 years when I was still guiding, so things have changed have a look at the hunting reports that are recent that should give you a good indication and give you a feel of what outfitters offer there.

There is only a handfull that operate there that are worthwhile but you will easliy be able to narrow down your choice going through the recent hunt reports.

If within your budget I would look into Zambia. I hunted there with Muchinga adventures and had the best safari to date. I saw more game in one day there than in my last two trips to Zim combined although I wasn't hunting in the premier areas. I saw three leopards during the day elephants,roan,kudu,puku and the Crocs and hippo were everywhere. Johnny and Laura Duplooy run a very good safari.

If you’re truly after that Hemingway/Ruark style experience, you’ll want to focus on Zimbabwe (Hwange, Save, Dande), Mozambique (Niassa), or Tanzania. That’s where you’ll find big, wild, unfenced concessions and proper tracking hunts. South Africa can produce big buffalo, but if fences are a concern for you, Zim/Moz/TZ are the safer bet.

First off, hats off to you for stopping that hunt in SA. That is exactly what separates a true hunter from a trophy collector. If you want that raw, unplugged Ruark experience with a .470 Nitro double in your hands, you absolutely need to look at Zimbabwe or Tanzania. For your first option (more rustic/hard hunting), look into the Dande North or Omay concessions in Zim—proper wild Zambezi Valley hunting where you’ll earn every single mile. For the second option with top-tier luxury accommodations for the wives but still 100% free-range hunting, look at the Malilangwe Trust (Zim) or a premium outfit in Tanzania's Selous/Nyerere. Taking a double buffalo in those areas is the pinnacle of dangerous game hunting. Best of luck, you are doing this the right way!
