Last Chance For CITES Brown Bear Hunt!

Sorry it went sideways. Marius is a gentleman and an outstanding outfitter. I leaving Saturday for another hunt with him.

@Dutchtrapper sorry I will miss you this trip. Good luck but leave a nice one for me!
Best of luck on your hunt. I'll be there the week after you, so save some for me. ;)

I relied on good reviews like yours to book this hunt. I gave him my rifle documents along with my passport mid August only to find out the night before I travel that no gun permit was pulled. Totally not cool and a deal breaker!

I’m all about honoring a gentlemans agreement when both parties perform their obligations. Having my gun is a lot more important than fussing about places to stay. The way you do something is the way you do everything. Hunters on this forum can make up their own mind.

Regardless…..I’m not going to burn any more energy debating with people on this forum. I’m not demonize this guy. All I’m saying is he dropped the ball on my hunt, tried to spin it on me and I cancelled the hunt. I’m disappointed about the whole thing!

My suggestion is that Buyer should ask a lot of questions and follow up with paperwork and solid communication.
Arod, can you show us where you requested to import the gun for this hunt, or the specific intention you will bring your gun?
( sending the documents, gun license, hunting license, copy of passport are mandatory to hunt in Romania. This is not assuring an importing rifle. Importing rifle request more informations, arrival airport , serial number of your rifle, caliber and manufacturer, number of ammunition)
You never mention and discussed about your rifle since last night! I’m not wining or losing with this topic. Just want to be cleared about your requests.

Best of luck on your hunt. I'll be there the week after you, so save some for me. ;)
Dont worry, i am not gone.
This morning we saw 2 stags, one was an abnormal, the distance was to far for me, so we decided to stalk to it(them, another stag had joined the abnormal), but it didn’t work.
This evening i was more lucky and i could harvest the stag who joined the abnormal one.
Report will follw.

Well in retrospect the biggest sign was that he never presented me with a contract or itinerary. I have been to Africa 3 times and have always been present with the hunt in writing. (Contract, itinerary, gun permit import application) never had an issue Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

I did reach out to a few guys that hunted with him. I got positive feedback and decided to go. Ultimately I canceled because if you can’t get my required paperwork right I can’t trust you with my safety in the field. Canceling was not something I wanted to do.
@ARod no communication ever gets this “mixed up” without Failure on Both parties. If the Outfitter did not require you to give a deposit in advance - he’s the one most damaged. I would guess a hard lesson learned for both

I don’t go on dangerous game hunts with other peoples rifle and ammo. I have proven rifle for these types of hunts. Second, the fact that he screwed up getting the gun permit and then tries to place the blame on me is B.S. and infuriating! I sent him my passport, and rifle customs form a month ago. He never mentioned an issue. To give him benefit of the doubt at best it’s bad communication. We can’t start a dangerous game hunt on a bad foot. So I cancelled the trip and am greatly disappointed!
@ARod your comment “I don’t go on DG hunts with other peoples rifle and ammo”?? A bit of a stretch - many Hunters on this forum strongly “prefer” their own rifle/ammo but I’m guessing many would still go on this hunt given the last minute circumstances that you claim. It’s not like you invented, made, own the only effective rifle for Bear and are being asked to use a Spear. You knew you did Not have your rifle permit weeks in advance but waited til last minute to cancel - fortunate you did Not have a 50%/$10,000+ deposit at stake - if so, would you have made the same decision? I Always take my own firearms on guided/away hunts (except in Mexico) but in the event of a Mutual miscommunication - I’d compromise and use the Outfitters…it would take some of the fun out of the hunt but unless there were other reasons I was looking to cancel the hunt——-I’d still go. While I may not understand your decision, it’s Your decision and I respect that. You opened it up to this AH forum so you may receive comments you don’t care for —- that’s the risk with posting.

I think @HUNTROMANIA proved it's class by not disclosing the hunter's name - the one who cancelled an expensive no-deposit hunt 2 days before the hunt. So kudos to Marius for that.

In Canada you need to apply a month in advance to secure the rifle export permit - the equivalent of US form 4457, hence you need to decide what rifle will be using, what ammo and how much etc. Also, for the application you would need an invitation to hunt and prove the intent of traveling (as in traveling tickets - air, water, rails etc). This proves commitment.
Similar stuff that Marius mentioned it's required to secure a firearm import permit in Romania.

How long does it take in the US and what documents are required for securing a 4457 form? Is it normally done just one day prior to departure? In that case I would say that the US hunter's have an unfair advantage.

Marius was a complete pleasure to work with on my bear hunt last year with him. Very clear communication and I had no doubts about anything along the way. He responded almost immediately to any questions I asked on WhatsApp. Great guy all around and I highly recommend him!

I have a hunt upcoming with Marius for November and his communication has been fantastic and timely. He has covered every detail. Sounds like Arod is perhaps not well traveled and failed to plan properly.
I think it just was a big hunt with lots of moving pieces to be made in only 5-6 weeks?

When you book an international hunt on short notice it raises the likely hood of a bump in the road.

An open mind and some flexibility could have led to the adventure of a lifetime and most likely a successful hunt.

I hope Marius can sell this hunt!

I think the confusion is rifle permit vs hunting permit. Marcus needed the documents for a hunting permit. As mentioned these types of documents are necessary even when using the outfitters rifle.

Feel bad for Marcus since he didn't ask for a deposit. Hope someone books this hunt and gets a great bear.

I asked Arod for documents because without is impossible to issue the hunting invitation and the temporary hunting permit. He provided me the documents, 4 days after (22.08) I received (18 of August) I did the Hunter invitation and announced the Romanian authorities. You can see in this hunting invitation is nothing written on the gun. This is standard procedure for any hunter! ( with or without gun import) He never mentioned to me he will bring his rifle until last night. Is the only reason we have all those problems. If someone is not asking specifically about rifle import I can’t guess Hunter wishes.
My take on this why the miscommunication happened is this. I think the hunter understood the asking for his gun license in the US as needed for the import procedures. Except it is not , is just needed to get a hunting permit.

Also what I understand you don't have any gun licenses in the US and the form that is asked and is needed is the same you need when traveling with a gun outside the US. Therefore the miscommunication. These things happen. Nobody's fault to be honest. I definitely would have opted to hunt with the rental instead of cancelling the hunt.

One thing that I would like to say as constructive feedback to the outfitter. I would not like it, as the hunter in question, that the PDF form you shared with us , has his private information on it. This is a public forum.

Edit: I see @LivingTheDream said the same.

Only 1 license left valid by 23 of December 2025!!!! Last chance for an exportable brown bear!

I’m just back from a bear hunt with another outfitter. One of my favorite hunts of all time in a country that is too little visited. Hope someone grabs this hunt.

My brown bear skin rug and skull are coming home next week. Thanks Marius for a great hunt. Your taxidermist did a fantastic job.
Book your hunt with HUNTROMANIA.

Exactly.

Spain, like Romania, requires fairly extensive paperwork to use a "rental" rifle. If I had to guess, that is where the confusion arose. I think it is a shame Marius did not require a meaningful deposit from @ARod. It would have protected him, and just maybe throwing away a few thousand dollars, would have broken through the snit ARod decided to pitch, and he would have boarded that plane for a great experience in Eastern Europe.

I have not hunted with Marius (yet), but based on the many reports by some of the most respected members on this site, I certainly would not hesitate to do so.

Very, very well said @Red Leg. Marius, being a very trusting outfitter, did not mandate a deposit up front (out of mutual respect and having hunted with him 2.5 years ago, I went ahead and wired him a significant deposit prior to my departure to Romania) for which the vast majority of outfitters require before much planning is put forth towards the logistics of the hunt (not just the rifle and hunting permits, but the places the client +/- guests will stay, food, tag, etc). This proves just how much of a great guy Marius @HUNTROMANIA is.

As I’ve said before so many times, I wish many more would strongly consider Romania as a hunting destination. And not just for hunting but touring as well. There is so much culture and beautiful churches in other landmarks to visit while there. Please refer to my prior threads.

Though I have yet to hunt there, both government and defense industry business have taken me there numerous times. At the turn of the last century, Bucharest became known as the "Little Paris," a sense of artistic and cultural sophistication that survived through the darkness of the Nicolae Ceaușescu regime and his overlords in Moscow.

The people are some of the friendliest in Europe, largely I think due to their Latin rather than Slavic cultural roots. Like Spain and Austria, Romania would be one of the perfect places in Europe for a hunting / tourist vacation with a spouse.
