I have a Remington 700 in 416 Remington mag and I’m having issues with bolt not wanting to close on the rounds I’ve measured the COAL and the brass trim to length it’s Hornady brass and I’m confounded I haven’t shot the rifle with anything else but only using Barnes ttsx and Hornady solids the bolt is just not wanting to close at times to chamber the round please help me figure it out I’ve even bought a different set of dies some Redding dies to try to see what’s the issue

Thanks

Check the chamber and throat for obstructions. Is your press fully pushing the cases into the dies?

Awesome to know and thank you I guess I’m the new owner of some Redding dies lol I ordered some to see if that rectified it I wonder what the issue is with the brass specifically that’s making it not reloadable

Ya it was on a 300 win mag. I was pulling my hair out.

Well I took the brand new virgin brass and loaded it after checking the brass was under the trim length I just loaded the brass and it’s worked on some of the rounds and some not I just am going to try different ammo

I’m going to get some new brass entirely what sucks is I’ve got fifty pieces of brass and prolly can’t use it I’ll sell it maybe someone else might have a chamber that doesn’t mind it

That didn’t fix it with my Hornady brass.
Hey I was gonna tell you I tried something with that Hornady brass I am able to get it to chamber and function with the unfired new brass, but I have to rotate it until I find the sweet spot then the bolt will close to me this tells me the brass is out of shape perhaps the belt or something it closes and chambers perfectly but unless I have it turned and in the sweet spot it won’t chamber the bolt just will not close I have since ordered new rounds to make sure this is truly the problem

And this is irregardless of if the brass has been resized it still acts this way I also picked up another set of Redding dies rather than the Lee dies I’m using to see if this helps and factory ammo

When I have had this situation, I found that the shoulder was not being bumped back enough when I resized the brass. It only takes a few thousandths to keep the bolt from closing as the case's shoulder is touching inside the chamber. This usually happens if the die is not screwed far enough down enough in the press. It helps to have a bump gauge when resizing brass. I only resize brass .002" below what the bump gauge shows on brass fired from my rifle. If you size more than .002" or .003" the case is likely to stretch above the head and on the 3rd or more firing of that brass case head separation could (and eventually will) occur.

This is what you need.

when this happens to me its always the size of the neck -- make sure its fully resized and another thought is it may need to be turned down like the long range guys do, just a thought

Belted magnum brass in general, has always been problematic when reloading; nothing new. The corrective action from dchamp solves the problem. I too have a Rem 700 in .416 Rem Mag.

Thanks for the guidance I will consider that collet die I did purchase myself some Redding dies to try over my older Lee dies to see if this changes anything I have also some different factory ammo coming too

So an update
I purchased a five pack of some factory made ammo from a company called grizzly safari and what do you know the brass was Hornady brass and guess what same issue it will not chamber into my gun, I am getting fed up with this and spending money on ammo and brass for it not to work. I wonder if there is anyone out there willing to send me one piece of brass not Hornady brand and let me see if it chambers into my gun before I decided to part ways with it

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
Thank you,
Bob
