Hello From South Dakota

Good day, Welcome!

Welcome to AH!

I have been in Colorado since college but grew up in the Black Hills of SD and my parents and brother now live near Sioux Falls. I have also hunted Coutada 9 in Mozambique. Send me a PM with your contact info and we can talk about C9 on a phone call. I had a great hunt there.

Welcome to AH Passagyrs!

Welcome aboard!

Can you get your 4457 form completed in Pierre? If not, call the customs office at the Sioux Falls airport and set up a time that works best. They don't make appointments but a phone call will assure that they are going to be open. It can also help you avoid a conflict with an incoming international flight that keeps them busy for a couple hours.

They run a great office there. Print off a 4457 form and bring it to their office with your rifle and it will take about 5 minutes.

Welcome to AH. Best of luck on your safari. Expect pictures and report when you return.

Welcome to the forum. Life long South Dakotan myself. Grew up north central on farm around Eureka. Lived in Pierre 24 years. Retired to Black Hills to be close to grandkids. Still have land in Campbell county and my son and I farm for deer and pheasants. 5th trip to the dark continent planned for June 2026. No better place to learn about Africa then this forum and from the fine folks that post here!

I was in the home improvement business doing mostly windows, doors and steel siding. I talked a friend into taking over when I retired in 2015. Craig Arneson who also owns Craig’s Taxidermy. He did the taxidermy on my 2012 and 2014 hunts. He lives in Ft Pierre.

@Passagyrs and I had a long conversation today.
Welcome aboard to him!
For all others, he is a long time hunter and good to go!

I joined this group today as I have finally booked my first hunt in Africa for Buffalo. I went on several photo 'safaris' with my Dad in the 80's and grew up reading many of the African hunting books in his huge collection. I have dreamt of a hunt there since those days. I am very interested to try to learn as much as I can from the experience of others about preparing for this hunt. I have a Winchester Model 70 in .375HH and the allure of a double rifle was too much for me to resist so I recently bought a .470NE Sabatti EDL. I'm very happy with my Winchester but not sure I made the right choice with the Sabatti for a couple reason that I hope to get some feedback on. I look forward to learning what I can....

Welcome aboard @Passagyrs. I try to go to SD to hunt pheasant, deer & turkey in the fall in Tripp County. A good friend has some property near Winer. Beautiful area and love how friendly the locals are towards hunters.

Welcome from Minnesota

Congratulations on your upcoming hunt! Welcome and look forward to your Hunting report.

Welcome! I spend time every year in the Ft Pierre grasslands chasing grouse. Love that part of the world.

I’m doing a hunt with Buzz in Zimbabwe next year. I didn’t realize he did hunts in Mozambique. Can’t wait to read your report.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
