Howdy,

I’m new here and an introduction thread seems to be the best way to start. And I’ll mention I’m not on the internet much as I don’t have a Facebook, twitter, instagram, and have never joined any other Internet forum believe it or not. Although I’ve stalked this forum for some years at this point.

Further about me, I’m in Tennessee and have hunted I would think quite a bit all around America for someone my age, 25. I’ve never hunted Africa or abroad. I got out of school earlier this year and started what you might call my first serious job.

I had plans to go to Mozambique this year with Cabassa safaris after speaking with them, and others, extensively at both the dsc and sci conventions this year. I’m thinking now I may aim for a trip next year since a hunt in the same year as starting a career, moving into a house, random projects, and my normal hobbies of guns and cars and biking is a bit ambitious.

One of my primary reasons for joining now is I’ve been on the look for a nice custom bolt gun chambered in 460 weatherby or more powerful. Such rifles are around but certainly not common it seems.

I have a Japan made weatherby lazermark in 460. It’s fantastic and the mark v is about my favorite action which is why I have several weatherby rifles. But they’re certainly not the best out there for a dangerous game rifle so if I could get a beautiful custom 460 or 585 nyati or something similar for less than the price of a new car then I’d be just fine with that.

Well I’ve rambled enough. Again hello all and thank you,
Hunter

Welcome from Indianapolis, Indiana - the racing capital of the world!

:S Welcome:

Welcome. When I was in my early 20’s I thought the Mark V was then bees knees. You will get wise with age. .

Good luck on your search. If I may, keep your eye open for a custom rifle chambered in .550 magnum. Much more tolerable than the Nyati, and likely more reasonable.

I still really like some of my Weatherby rifles. :)

On the .460 front, simply stated, it is not a very popular round. With that being said, you can find some great deals. Keith Heppler seemed to chamber quite a few .460s and their are beautiful. Keep your eyes open for one.

Greetings from Texas, and welcome! We already have three things in common - we’re both new around here, generally avoid social media, and are fans of the Mark V. Also, congrats on the new career! Its easy to let things like that get in the way of things like a Safari in Mozambique, so I hope that if you do push to ’25, you keep your eyes on the prize and make it happen.

Welcome to AH TennesseeHunter! Nice to have you join the conversation.

Greeting’s TennesseeHunter,

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

As for truly powerful rifles, I know that you want another .460 Weatherby caliber one or, something even more powerful.
The below listed cartridges #1. and 2. produce less foot pounds of energy than the .460 does and perhaps cartridges #3. and 4. might also be technically “less powerful” (in terms of muzzle energy foot pounds).
But, I’m not sure and I’m too lazy to Google it up at the moment.

I am not one to wring my hands and pace the floor over mathematical calculated foot pounds of muzzle energy.
Instead, I always favor specific cartridges according to their proven history, earned from decades of actual hunting, not manufacturer’s advertising claims.
Three of the four I’ve listed below have 100 year or more stellar history each, in the hunting of heavy dangerous game, up to and including countless elephant at very close range.
And, even the newest one of the four listed (.458 Lott) has a wonderful performance record, however short that may be (53 years) ?
The Lott again by reputation, is splendid for heavy, dangerous game, including elephant at sword fighting distance.

Anyway, I suggest that you look for a CZ made Model 550 Magnum, in any if the 4 following calibers;
1.
.416 Rigby.
2.
.458 Lott.
3.
.500 Jeffery.
4.
.505 Gibbs.

Sadly the Model 550 has been discontinued.
However thankfully, CZ had made so many of them that, they are not impossible to find.
Furthermore, such hard kickers almost always have been fired very little.
Not many people can tolerate firing shoulder cannons for hundreds of rounds.
And so, such grand rifles often are sold soon after purchase.

Good luck with your rifle search and your new career also, thank you for joining the forum.
Great minds think alike —> Yours truly does not belong to any social media sites either, except this forum (in case anyone wants to call it “social media”).

Best Regards,
Velo Dog.

Welcome to AH.

You can find quite a few Tennesseans are on AH. What part of this state are you in? I and a few others are here in the northeast area, north of Knoxville. There are a few more around the Nashville area.

Welcome to the posting side. Nashville maybe the nicest all around city I’ve ever
Visited.
Keep that hunting trip in your plans, lots of great experiences headed your way

Welcome and we look forward to your participation!

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
